BMW M57 Failed Timing Chain

BMW E61 M57N 530d 235 hp with broken timing chain.

Another bad / failed camshaft timing chain on the legendary BMW M57 engine. The engine didn't have any rattling chain symptoms or noises before the failer.
This video will show what are the consequences after this accident and what should be done to fix it.

My E46 330xd with the M57 engine has now over 430.000 km with his first timing chain. But now the timing chain is hearable. Will now replace all chains and sprockets and also the oil pump.

I guess they must've updated the timing gear at some point, because in the US the E70 X5D and E90 335D are deep into the 200-300k miles without timing failures (with some exception). My 2012 E70 is right around 230k miles (370k kilometers) and my 2011 E90 is at 172k miles (276k kilometers), both with original timing chains.

Did you use any sealant for the timing cover or is it just the metal seal without anything

I have m57 with lots of oil in the breather. Tried new vortex and still bad. 190000miles is this bad piston rings?

When I bought my 325d e91 with m57 engine I have been told just that.Timing chain should be changed every 200.000kms.
Curious:speaking of exhaust smoke what is the normal oil consumption on these engines?

What about the early M57? E39 530D model, I have one with 352k KM, no idea if the chain has been done or not. I rarely see anyone in the M57 groups with chain failure on the older cars.

Hi! I bought an e60 with m57 d3 broke engine. I want to rebuild. Nüral D2 piston is ok for the D3? So only mahle?
