HOW TO ACCLIMATE FISH TO A NEW POND

When you bring new fish home they will need to be acclimated to their new environment, mainly the temperature of the water.

If your fish do not appear stressed, go ahead and float the bag in your pond for about 15-20 minutes. This will equalize the water temperature in the bag with the pond. If the area is in the sun, cover the bag while it floats with a towel or if they were shipped, use the cardboard box that they were shipped in. This will prevent the water inside the bag from heating. Eliminating the greenhouse effect.

After the floating period, go ahead and open the bag- letting some of the pond water enter the bag. Carefully release the fish by hand. Add a conditioner with aloe vera, or slime coat replacer if necessary.
The importance for acclimation is this. Basically, the temperature of the pond water is the temperature of the fish. This being because their outer membrane is so paper thin. A drastic change in temperature can be fatal. So, always properly acclimate new fish.
