How and when to cut a hedge. See how we do it

Here I’m talking about our hedges – yew (Taxus) and beech (Fagus sylvatica). They are such an important part of my garden because the hedges divide the ground in smaller rooms.

My name is Claus Dalby, and I live in Risskov on the outskirts of Aarhus in Denmark. To date, I have written about 30 books on flowers and gardens in Danish, and my garden has been featured on many TV shows. In March 2022 my first book in English will be available. I consider my home (built in1908), and its garden with its neighboring wood, as my sanctuary. When I started gardening in 1996, there was just a large lawn covering approximately 1 acre (4,000 square meters), but today the grass is long gone - replaced by 15 hedged rooms with varying colors and moods. Additionally, one of my great passions is growing in pots, arranged to create spectacular container gardens, which I will share quite a bit about on this channel. Decor and creating moods have always interested me - both outside and inside - and I love to use the flowers from my garden for bouquets and to inspire other crafts that create a sense of hygge.

I don't even have a hedge, but I'll still watch you trim them!

I could watch him trim those hedges all day, there is something soothing about the process. Especially love the music that is playing, it is very soothing. Thanks for another great video.

Every video you upload underscores for me the idea that gardening is an expression of creativity. The trimming of the hedges shows an artist with complete command of his equipment. I appreciate the respect you have for your garden.

Mesmerizing. It's a secret garden of a museum of a magical land. And how gently Claus touches those hedges!

Oh wow! He is cutting them freehanded. What a skill! I get nervous and put sticks and string to help guide me. I might try without and see what happens. I'm glad a subscriber mentioned I should check your channel out. I love what I'm seeing and subscribed right away. Linda from New England 🇺🇸

Your gardener is amazing with that hedge trimmer, and he’s not bad to look at either. 👀

Love the serenity that hedge brings to the garden. Loved to watch your friend trim the top with such care. A true artist!! Loved the Hosta grouping in pots. I may borrow that idea. Claude, thanks for sharing!!

We had very old Yew at our old house, and cutting it was never so easy to reach with an ordinary cutter. This year my Buxux shrubs are overgrown because the weather was too hot, now very wet; I'm rather anxious in case they grow too big. Your hedge are exquisite Claus.
