May all who truly seek Jesus memorize scripture better than they memorized their favorite song.

Summary

1. survey the book (river) : (1) author (2) audience (3) purpose (4) date of publication
2. find the verse (fish)'s exact, physical place in the book, and also using a river diagram / river metaphor 3:54
3. follow the current of the theme, story, or argument, and you'll know what the verse is about even if you don't recall the words

So helpful! Thanks for modelling the method with the passage in Ephesians. Really helpful for us visual learners!

This was great, because I always remember where it is in the book you gave me some more tips! And yes, get the meaning over just rote repetition of empty words! 6:27

I see a lot to be gained by this because we will become more fluid in His Word. I think that I also want to repeat the verse because its another way of engraving it on my heart!

Absolutely love this idea! The importance of context is paramount and especially when memorizing single verses! Thank you!

There are two sides to this. On the one hand, you're correct, it will often be more useful to remember the content of a chapter or verse rather than the specific verbiage, and you can absorb much more of Scripture much more quickly by doing so. But there was soemthing I feel you neglected in your video that I'd like to point out:

All Scripture is God-breathed, down to the very words. A lot of insight can be found in the specific word choice and grammatical structures of a passage, especially the closer you get to the original languages. Memorizing passages word-for-word can help you learn the "current" of the text more deeply, to use your analogy. I've found that repeating texts as if speaking them to the intended recipients pushes me to interpret and intonate the words in ways that don't come naturally just from reading the text. It forces you to become more intimately familiar with the Scripture you're reciting when you must do so by heart, and in more detail than the approach in this video demands.

Additionally, attempting to memorize Scripture demands giving it greater intentional thought, constantly turning the verses over in your mind to see how they connect. We are called to meditate on Scripture, which we are more greatly enabled (and required) to do when memorizing the text, especially with longer passages. This helps to wear those paths more deeply in our hearts and minds, so that we perceive the world, ourselves, and even other Scriptures more readily in light of verses we have already invested the time and effort in memorizing.

The method you explain here is certainly of great benefit for understanding how Scripture fits together and flows from one chapter to the next. But there is great value and personal growth that can come from dwelling on the smaller details as well. I'd argue both are necessary, not only one or the other.

This sounds like the Eagle & Wolf method we use in primary school to making meaning of texts. Great idea to use it with scripture!

I'll have to try this. I've found that understanding the author and audience does help, and sometimes the year they were written. But numbers have always been difficult for me to retain. This visual method may help. Remembering author, audience and year also helps to keep the meaning in context.

Ok fine for basic understanding but nah it’s FAR better to know meaning WITH words than meaning without words. This seems more like a cop out for not memorizing scripture. The words are part of the power of the Holy Spirit. Also remembering the words correctly deepens the understanding of the meaning and you can effectively teach someone Biblical doctrine. Therefore being far more profitable and charitable to others.

I feel the most important verses to memorize are verses that pertain to defence of the faith/making diciples of all nations
