I was born into Christianity. After I left, I was blown away to learn how little anyone actually read their bible. Anyone's faith was truly only by way of group think and of the preacher, not even the book. Daniel Dennett makes a great point that religion only thrived because information was hard to come by. I guess being born in the age of the internet kinda threw a wrench in the whole thing for me. At first it sucked to leave friends behind, but anyone not willing to question isn't really a friend of mine.

People Create Cultures.

God didn't make us. People invented the imaginary idea of gods. "God" means something different to everyone, but it is always something imaginary.

Best thing my Dad did was emphasize what a croc of sheet religeon was. Very early on to me as a child. This stood me in good stead throughout my life.

I am so proud of my wife and me to bring up our two wonderful and intelligent children without religion.

Finally someone making sense. God is mans creation, to give them answers to questions they are too afraid to answer themselves.

Religion: NEVER HAVE SO MANY BEEN FOOLED BY SO LITTLE FOR SO LONG! Immeasurable damage has been and continues to be done by people's religious beliefs. The world would be a better place without the nonsense of religion.

Religion is humanity's search for meaning, and also for easy answers. Religion codifies what is essentially mysterious and unknowable. And a false consolation for what people fear most: death. As Shakespeare wrote, for Hamlet: To be or not to be: THAT is the question.

I'm an atheist of long standing and I don't a religion to tell me that I shouldn't kill, steal or bear false witness against my neighbour.

Religion will not go away because people will give up knowledge to have comfort and to belong to something.

In most Christianity, the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil is the basis of original sin for which we cannot be forgiven without the blood of Christ. Ignorance is a virtue, and had Adam and Eve remained ignorant, there would have been no sin.

Information will not make religion disappear because willful ignorance will never disappear.

I don't think any leader of religions will give up his empire by informing his followers.

I believe Daniel is largely correct, but there is one flaw underlying his argument. It's true that, with electronic communication, there is MUCH more information available to penetrate the insular ignorance that religion demands.

That said, I think we've all seen that, even in the 'information age, ' humans STILL find a way to insulate themselves from information or facts that might challenge what they already believe. There's more information overall, but there's also more information within their ideological bubbles to reinforce and confirm their biases. The rest of it is 'blocked' and ignored.

Secular humanism is a philosophy, belief system, or life stance that embraces human reason, logic, secular ethics, and philosophical naturalism, while specifically rejecting religious dogma, supernaturalism, and superstition as the basis of morality and decision making.

Secular humanism posits that human beings are capable of being ethical and moral without religion or belief in a deity. It does not, however, assume that humans are either inherently good or evil, nor does it present humans as being superior to nature. Rather, the humanist life stance emphasizes the unique responsibility facing humanity and the ethical consequences of human decisions. Fundamental to the concept of secular humanism is the strongly held viewpoint that ideology be it religious or political must be thoroughly examined by each individual and not simply accepted or rejected on faith. Along with this, an essential part of secular humanism is a continually adapting search for truth, primarily through science and philosophy.

We created God's to explain everything that we had no explanation for. Then we began using God as an excuse for all the evil we do.
I'm better off without God fearing people, all I see today are cult religions .

Is it just me, or does Daniel Dennett make atheism sound like a breath of fresh air? 🚀 Morality is about reason, not worshiping a deity, right?
