Cool topic. On an unrelated note, that's a hell of a v-neck.

You know, this got me to appreciate my favorite song on a whole new level. I'm hearing things I've not given any mind to previously. I will never be the same, but for the better.

Love this, people look at me as mental, I tend to unpick the music and break it down, trying work out what's cool to my ear, or even thinking ahead to guess what's coming next. Endomorph by Allan Holdsworth, usually makes me cry.

The Watchmaker by Steven Wilson, off of The Raven That Refused to Sing (And Other Stories). The orchestration, or lack thereof, the mood of the music as it corresponds to the lyrics, the space to let the different movements breathe, it's all perfect.

Takes me back to when I was starting to be interested in music, I noticed simple things which later I learned are called "Rythm" "Voices" "Harmony" "Counterpoint" .. etc .. the building blocks of music
These concepts are pretty intuitive, and I believe that even non-musicians can benefit from simple music education and just observing music more critically !

This brought me back to my college days as well. I hated listening to classical music. I just wanted to play drums. I listen to everything now... Music is wonderful and deserves all our attention. Great post!! As a fellow drummer/educator, I find inspiration in what you bring to YouTube! Keep up the fantastic work! :)

I took a music history class and I felt the same way. I thought this is going to suck!!! I did learn a lot from that class though and I haven't listened to music the same way since. It's a blessing and a curse. Sometimes I can't just enjoy music as a whole because I get caught up on specific parts at times. Specially in movies, I always paid attention to film scores, even before taking that class, but now I zone in on the music so much that I miss out on the movie. Small parts of the movie. I always use the original evil dead soundtrack to explain why music, or lack of, pulls me into the film even more. And now that I think about it, it was the movie Amadeus that got me really listening before I took that class. That scene when Salieri describes Mozart's piece. Awesome!

It's really hard to mention a song. I would rather pick a band. "The Doors" really inspired me a lot. The drums are varied and interesting , the piano/organ is beautiful. The lyrics are just mystical and haunted :)

The song that inspires me is Stone Flower by Tom Jobim, the way it starts and how it develops throughout the short time it lasts continues to amaze me. Every detail is captivating and its one of the songs I rather focus listening in any other instrument over the percussion.

When I pick out everyone's part including my own, I consider that a starting point. Your videos inspire me and a must watch for any serious drummer.
