Me, taking notes:
Step 1: Play air drums
Step 2: Make Drumface
Fair enough, great song choice

First time in all my 49 years fueled by ACDC, Metallica, Aerosmith, Ozzy, GnR, etc, I actually enjoyed a jazz song bc Rick made it so fun. Wow!

This video should be titled: "how to ENJOY music."

I'm quite an accomplished multi-air instrumentalist, Rick knows what he's saying.

How to listen to music.

Step one: Repeat "Oh Yea" while listening.

Hearing is one thing, listening is a completely different entire entity! Really strong and helpful! Makes ye want to appreciate what you hear even more!

With zero sarcasm, this is actually one of the most instructive videos ever! Seriously, this is something that is lost in our day.... music is consumed like fast food and it is not savored... love it. Watched with my kids and told them Rick nailed it!

You can see how Rick has taken in every aspect of this piece through repeated listening - he has listened deeply to each part, and appreciates not only the individual playing but how the parts combine, and how the musicians reacted to each other’s playing. Its like being able to look at an object and take it in as one thing, turning it this way and that and admiring it from different angles, while simultaneously zooming in on each individual piece of the object and studying their separate designs and what they are made of, and further, appreciating how all the individual pieces fit together; the assembly of it. There is so much to listen to in this piece too - great example. His knowledge and deep understanding helps him glean all this information, and its so great to see him point it out as he listens to it. Its a way for people without deep musical understanding to begin to catch a glimpse of “what makes this song great”.

Go cat go!

I never thought I'd get excited watching a video about jazz while a guy is playing air drums. While I am untrained musically (another reason I love your videos, learning!), I think I've always listened to music this way, not knowing what I was hearing, just that it was amazing.

Rick your studio background is like the chill/lounge version of Guitar Center. :-)

This is why I love you man. You teach music at some of the most complex levels, but still are just able to sit back and enjoy it. Love the content and wish I could follow more with what you teach. Lol

I love this idea! You're so right, there is hearing and there is listening. Really listening is a commitment that even many musicians don't always do.

Imagine someone riding the public transport and listening to tunes like Rick.
"AND NOW, SOLO *bam* *bam* ... Oh man!"
