Advanced Quadratics for the PSAT, SAT, & ACT

We are less than 4 weeks from the SAT!!! Today’s set on advanced quadratics shows how to:

-sum the solutions of a quadratic function using the quadratic formula
-identify the x-value that will result in a maximum y-value in a quadratic function
-identify the total number of solutions from a system with a quadratic function

These question types are VERY COMMON on the SAT, and many students find them challenging for two primary reasons:

1) The way these problems are written is very different from what we are accustomed to seeing in school.
2) Solving these questions can be very time-consuming!

These are the exact reasons why these problems are SO valuable to learn!

Most students believe they MUST be doing the problems incorrectly when they find themselves working through what feels like an endless stream of calculations that they know will take 3-4 minutes to complete! The reality is that the test is actually set up — in part — to measure our ability to stay focused and confident enough to allow ourselves to work through a high number of steps.

These questions are not necessarily difficult; they’re time-consuming! So, there are 3 VERY important things we need to remind ourselves of when we come across time-consuming questions:

1) EVERY SAT includes SOME math questions that will take 2-4 minutes.
2) The test is set up to include these questions, so there are also always SEVERAL questions that can be completed in 20-30 seconds!
3) We will use the time that we “bank” from questions that we can solve quickly and apply it to questions that take more time!
