How to cure a calabash mate gourd 🎃

Calabash fruit grows in many different countries across the globe. The fruit is harvested and dried by hand, before being carefully crafted into a gourd, ready for purchase. 🧉

However, this does not mean it is ready for use straight out of the box. Eager as you may be to begin using your gourd, it is essential that you cure it before using it for the first time. This will prevent any damage in the long-term and ensure that you get the best maté-drinking experience! 🙌

Step 1 - Fill the gourd with regular tap water and empty it. This ensures that there is no loose plant matter within the gourd. 🚰

Step 2 - Take a small spoon and gently scrape the inside of the gourd, just to make sure there is no excess plant material inside. 🥄

Step 3 - Rinse the gourd once again, getting rid of the anything you just dislodged inside the gourd. 🌱

At this point, you have 2 different options for continuing with the process, depending on your circumstances:

• (RECOMMENDED) Curing the maté with Yerba Mate which has already been used (i.e. ready to be thrown away). 🚮

• Curing the gourd by combining water and fresh Yerba Mate, straight from a packet. 🏷️

If you are new to drinking maté, it is likely that you will need to pick the second option - not to worry, though, as brand-new yerba combined with water still works a treat! 🙌

IF YOU PICKED OPTION 1 - FOLLOW THESE STEPS:

Remove the used yerba from the gourd/cup it was previously in using a spoon and add it to the gourd which needs curing. We recommend that you do this over a bin, to collect any loose yerba which might fall out. 🗑️

Leave it inside the gourd for at least 12 hours, if not longer. ⌚

Clean it out, and rinse the gourd, before drying it, and repeating the process.

We recommend that you perform this twice - each time leaving the used Yerba in your gourd for 24 hours. ⌛

Once you've done that - you're good to go! 🎊

IF YOU PICKED OPTION 2 - FOLLOW THESE STEPS:

Fill the gourd to the top with Yerba Mate. 🌿

Fill the gourd to the top with water heated to around 80 degrees Celsius.🌡️

The rest of the steps are the same as above!

You mean after the first 24 hours, I need to do the same thing again for another 24 hours ? twice ?
