I remember when i was younger that i one time for a schoolcamp trip had to scare some people at night with some other folks. It was during a so called 'nightwalk' through some scary dark woods we organised for our classes. I always loved scaring people so i felt surprisingly comfortable, standing there behind a tree, in the middle of the night, in a very spooky forest, waiting for folks to pass by so i could scare them or go after them and stalk them for a bit. I felt like a predator at the time, no fear for the dark at all, instead, i started loving it. i even felt so fearless that i was convinced that i would dare to just walk away to the dark middle of nowhere of the woods (didnt do it though). Shit changes when youre put in the predator position. The fear just vanishes and instead of feeling hunted you start to feel like a threatening hunter yourself. Wish i could one day do something like. that again. Cause that night was super fun for someone like me who likes scaring people.

My guess is that we are afraid of the dark because humans are naturally afraid of the unknown. Mostly we fear what we don't know and if we can't see what's in the dark we fear it instead. But as you said, it's a good thing.
