Sergeants Gary Gordon and Randy Shughart were operators in the U.S. Army Delta Force, and gave their lives during the Battle of Mogadishu in Somalia on October 3, 1993. Their acts of heroism and bravery, were portrayed in the classic movie, "Black Hawk Down".

They were part of a joint mission to fight the Somali warlord, Mohamed Farrah Aidid.

When the second Black Hawk helicopter, piloted by Officer Michael Durant, was shot down, Sergeants Gordon and Shughart, ignoring certain death, went down to help the crew on the ground.

They fought bravely against the attacks of a mob of armed rebels. During the intense firefight, Sergeant Gordon was the first to drop dead, shot in the head. But Sergeant Shughart continued to fight, until he too was killed.

They are the first servicemen to posthumously receive the Congressional Medal of Honor, since the end of the Vietnam War.

Their families received the honor from President Bill Clinton on May 23, 1994.

I don’t think most Americans even comprehend just exactly what these two did and more so the fact that from their “safe” initial vantage point they knew that a rescue force would definitely not be imminent and that they were absolutely asking to be put in knowing full well that they would die!!! Yet these two did so willingly and enthusiastically bc they could not sit by idly without even trying to do something. The level courage, bravery, determination and absolute balls to do this CANNOT and SHOULD NOT ever be overlooked. Many men have acted heroically in the heat of the battle and in the heat of the moment bc they weren’t given time to think about the consequences and so many that have done true acts of heroism and survived almost to a man say that they didn’t realize exactly what they were doing and what the risks were. These two had an eagles view of what was unfolding and they pleaded to be put in if only to hope for a miracle that they knew would not be coming anytime soon. The pilot…Michael Durant owes everything to them!!!! I salute them always and think of them with the highest regard I could ever have for another human

It was said they took some 300 of them with them. Imagine that. 2 men vs a thousand and they managed to get 300 of them. These guys were the best of the best. Legendary warriors.

To know that you won't come back and still go anyway. Hard AF.

I think what's crazy is one of them went down. Practically facing certain death, the second operator decided to fight until he couldn't. Both of those men were absolute units of warriors

I read the book Black hawk down some 25 years ago in high school. Over those 25 years i've forgotten many things, names, birthdays, car keys, etc. Somehow the names of these two men..no, heros has stuck with me. I'm not sure why but for some reason that information has just stuck with me...actually I'm wrong, I do know why. I just can't put it into words. Something about their bravery and sacrifice stirred something deep within me and really struck a cord with me. Here I am trying to pat myself on the back for remembering their names when really their names and deeds are something all Americans should know and remember. We owe them and all service men and women a profound thank you.
