To change a mixed number like 2 1/2 (two and one-half) to an improper fraction, follow these steps:
First, multiply the whole number (the 2) by the denominator of the fraction (the 2 in 1/2). Then add this number to the numerator (the 1 in 1/2). You end up with 5.
