Write the 1/2 as a Decimal

In order to change 1/2 to decimal form we need to divide 1 by 2. We know that since 1 is smaller than 2 we are going to end up with a number less than 1.

We can divide 1/2 with a calculator or do it longhand. In this video I did the division longhand (but checked my answer with a calculator). When we divide 1 by 2, we get 0.5.

So: 1/2 = 0.5

0.5 is less than 1 so that is a good way to check if our answer is reasonable.

Note that 1/2 and 0.5 represent the same quantity, they are just written in different formats. 1/2 is a fraction and 0.5 is in decimal form.
