In order to change 3 1/2 to decimal form we need to convert it to a mixed fraction. 3 1/2 as a mixed fraction is 7/2.

We can now divide 7 by 2. We know that since 7 is larger than 2 so we are going to end up with a number greater than 1.

We can divide 7 by 2 with a calculator or do it longhand. In this video I did the division longhand (but checked my answer with a calculator). When we divide 7 by 2 we get 3.5. So:

3 1/2 = 7/2 = 3.5

3.5 is greater than 1 so that is a good way to check if our answer is reasonable.

Note that 7/2 and 3.5 represent the same quantity, the are just written in different formats. 7/2 is a fraction and 3.5 number with a decimal.
