Write 5/2 as a Mixed Number

In order to write 5/2 as a mixed number in simplest form (sometimes people will say "as a whole number") we can follow a few steps.

Note that 5/2 is already simplified (in lowest terms). So we can't reduce or simplify 5/2 any further. But we can write is as a mixed number.

First we can divide the numerator (5) by the denominator (2). 2 goes into 5 a total of 2 times with a remainder of 1.

Second, we take the remainder and put it over the original denominator. This gives us 1/2.

For the mixed fraction we have the whole number 2 and the fraction (from the remainder) of 1/2.

So 5/2 written as a mixed number is 2 1/2 (two and one-half)

To check your work you can now multiply the whole number in mixed number by the denominator (2 x 2) and add this to the numerator (the 1 in the 1/2) you will get 5/2. This is a good way to check that you have the right mixed fraction.
