How To Grow Jade Houseplants Indoors + Repot, Prune & Propagate Crasula Plants

In 2018 I introduced the Jade Plant as one of the easiest houseplants for beginners when it comes to caring for them. I still stand by that statement today. 3 years later my jade plant has grown to the tree like plant I wanted, with thick trunks and branches. In this video, I share how to care and grow the jade plant from baby plant into a large plant. Although the jade plant thrives in warmer climate as an outdoor plant, they can grow to be big and beautiful as an indoor houseplant. To grow healthy jade plants indoor you'll want to make sure you can provide a lot of bright indirect light, with even a few hours of direct sunlight. I have mine near my south facing window. Because these are succulent they retain a lot of the water in their trunk and leaves, so watering less is always best.

I'll also cover some of the common issues or problems you’ll often experience when caring and growing a jade plant indoors, like pest, dropping of leaves and root rot. We also do a bit of repotting, pruning and propagation. Enjoy.

I rescued a Jade from my local Walmart. It was wrinkly and so dry. I brought it home changed the soil and watered it. She’s doing great! Starting to put off new leaves.
Thanks for the info Christian.

My mom forced me to take a sad little sapling of jade home that was way over watered....3 years later it's probably my plant doing the best. Lots of summer sun, a porcelain pot not too much water. Only re pot or prune every few years. Love them.

My Jade was the first houseplant I ever got. She's thriving like crazy! One of my favorite plants of all time. They're super resilient and will bounce back if you do forget to water.

Such a helpful video! I received a Jade plant from my neighbor that was given to me with leaves dropping and branches falling down. I didn't know anything about the plant, but knew likely it was an over watering problem. After watching this, I can see it's rotting so now I am going to do my best to save it. Thanks so much for this video!

I have several jade plants and they are happiest when I flat out ignore them. They live in squat, shallow pots; substrate of cacti/succulent soil and heavy on the perlite; southwest light but in the colder months I move them away from the windows a bit since they don't like getting cold. Only water when they start to wrinkle. Easy peasy!

Hi Christian! I killed a Jade plant years ago by overwatering it. I didn’t know I could propagate it either. Thank you for your tips. I will consider getting a jade plant because now I know what I did wrong.

You should get a silver dollar jade (the ones with big blue leaves with red tips). They have a very unique beauty. Also with your jade plant I highly recommend pruning some of its branches and shaping it into a bonsai. It already has the look and feel of an old tree, so you might as well encourage that and turn it into something amazing :)

I have sooo many different types of jade because I just love them all so much. They’re all so unique, easy to care for, and rewarding. I have crasssula ovalata (sp?) mini and regular, I have a huge elephant bush and the variegated version of it some call “rainbow bush” and it’s literally one of my pride and joys I love it so much and I’ve propagated it so many times and it keeps it’s variegation and is so resilient. I’ve got the wavy leaf jade, the “ogre ear”, Gollum, one that’s like a silver dollar but with long pointy leaves that are kind of powdery and silver, and I also have a few silver dollar jade. My first jade, the regular ovalata, literally all died except for 3 stems. I got it 4 years ago and I was in the process of moving, so I lost 95% of the plant within a year. But somehow by some plant god miracle, I saved the last 3 living stems, propagated them, and I’ve almost got the plant back to the same density and height as when I first bought it. It was one of my first succulent plants so I learned a lot from it and I think that’s why I have so many... after experiencing so much with this plant, it’s earned a special place in my heart forever. I’ll never not have jade all over my house. All varieties are welcome. But I do especially love my first jade plant, naturally, and of course the gorgeous variegated rainbow bush. I can’t wait until my jade starts looking like a little tree! I’m pruning her as needed and trying to stay patient, encouraging her every day and celebrating her new growth. Wish me luck! And good luck to you with your jades!! Thanks for the encouragement, sometimes videos come exactly when I need them, and this was what I needed to reassure me I’m doing things the best I can.
