Losing 22 terabytes of storage due to a faulty power supply sucks

We as the customers need to file a petition for standardization.

This story is mostly correct. EVGA sent him the same model of power supply (NOT a different model), but at some point they changed pin rail layout on the same model. This wasn't a case of "he should have seen that they were two different ones", because the model numbers were the EXACT same on both. There was no way to tell the two PSU's apart unless you had a multimeter

The worst part of this is that EVGA's RMA process for power supplies says to not send in your cables with the brick, and I get the impression they don't send new cables with the replacement. So there's not really any way a user could predict this happening.

22 TB STORAGE??? That sucks. Hope he had backups.

IMPORTANT NOTE: The guy didn't lose all his files because he had cloud storage, and it was backed up recently! EVGA is also paying to replace all the drives that he lost.

Huge props to evga for actually making an effort to right their mistake, something rare nowadays

I was thinking about buying a PCU that did not have the cables with it. This completely changes my mind. 😂

I'm at a loss as to why there isn't a standard for power supply side connectors. The ATX standard already exists for the motherboard connecters, why not have something similar for the PSU side? The only reason I can think of is form factor, but every MPSU I've built with have had connectors very similar in form factor to each other.
It just seems so obvious, it would be extremely useful for the consumer, and also save the manufacturer from expensive situations such as this. Granted not ever manufacturer is as generous as EVGA, but still.

EVGA: we only human after all, we only human after all, don't put the blame on US.

Good on EVGA for helping this guy out after their mistake

you forgot to mention that EVGA told the guy not to send back the cables and didn’t include any cables with the replacement unit. Louis Rossmann made a detailed video if anyone’s interested.

Luckily he had back ups of everything, as soon as evga replaces his hard drives he's going to move everything to them.

Buying EVGA was a smart decision on his part. I've been using their PSUs for years and can't remember a single failure. Most of the failures I've seen have been Corsair honestly.

That's why corsair type 4 cables are so nice. Can upgrade a psu without swapping out cables, as long as it's another type 4 corsair unit

I just did this with a hope ans a prayer. Replaced my 850watt asus strix PSU with a 1200 watt ROG Thor PSU, I knew there was a possibility of them changing the wiring layout at the psu connectors so I did a quick search on cable mods to see if the cables they sold fit both model power supply’s.. it was kind of hard to tell as they didn’t list my old psu Exactly but one very close to it and showed it being the same so I reused all My old white sleeved cables and said a quick prayer before pressing the power button that I wouldn’t fry my 13900k and 3090 and over 8tb of NVMEs and D5 pump. Sure enough she booted right up.. tragity avoided 😅

Always use included cables got it .Thanks for this .

NGL I always assumed modular PSUs were standardized if only to save money by just making the same cables for everything.

I will say I no longer feel bad about spending so much about physical HDDs for doing home backups.
