In this edition of PTR Time Trials, we address DeWalt’s claim that their Flexvolt Advantage technology works alongside their line of Flexvolt batteries to provide 42% more power than their predecessors. We tested the DeWalt DCD999 Flexvolt Advantage cordless drill three times on our test track, once with a 2.0 Ah battery, once with a 5.0 Ah, and then finally with the 6.0 Ah Flexvolt battery. Will DeWalt be able to deliver on its claims? And how will it stack up against some of the other cordless drills we’ve tested? All that and more on PTR Time Trials Episode 2.

Great review. I like your concise style and lack of repetition. The tables are really important to my review process.

Just a kind and helpful suggestion; your time trial set up is kinda cool, however, I would suggest adding or using larger type of SPAX screws, or small lags, which would test the power and speed of a particular drill. They would not need to be Huge, just something more than drywall screws. And further, pre set them into the material, which would eliminate any fumbling with starting the screws, guessing at the time, etc. Thanks for considering this. Stay safe and Healthy!

Nice video!!
As starter i just bought the thought kit which includes skillsaw, grinder flexvolt advantage and sold the atomic drills to get the xr impact and flexvolt drill, sold my old tools cheap and got enough to buy the reciprocal saw flexvolt too with battery included, now i have new tools and the whole new advantages tools thanks to this new deals, I use to buy cheap tools on yard sales but end it up not working well but now with the buy of a new home ( needs a lot of work) this tools will help a lot.

I don't like videos where the time is influenced by how fast the person uses it. I like side by side comparison of the tool itself. I love the video idea but not the execution of it. But I respect you guys for making these videos. Just wish we could see the tool in action more

Nice video! I have 999 and I enjoy it. I have never seen it is faster than that. I used the Milwaukee Selfeed Bit, it works really good.

On a more technical note, each lithium cells are rated to kick out about 20-40 amps with of course a massive voltage drop. The more in parallel (in this case the amp hour rating), the more rated maximum current draw, but also multiplied output power. (Lots of ways to look at this, batter overall ESR is the limiting factor, and parallel cell connections lower the overall ESR)
For people that says higher AH rating only gives you a higher capacity (energy), and not power, they are wrong. The performance of the DCD999 is the result of a monstrous battery and careful tuning of the electronic control side of things.
I'll be doing a teardown of it and some inspection from an electronics point of view.

I have the DCD 998 power detect. Everything I saw before making the purchase decision had it smoking the Flex Volt tool.

You should bring the 998 into the game.
