Watch Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett introduce the Gibson Custom Shop Kirk Hammett "Greeny" 1959 Les Paul Standard.

Ask a guitar fanatic what the number 9 2208 refers to, and they know right away, it’s Greeny. No other guitar has earned legendary status like this magical 1959 Les Paul Standard. The Gibson Custom Shop is proud to honor this legacy and bring this magic to more players with the global launch of the Kirk Hammett “Greeny” 1959 Les Paul Standard Made 2 Order featuring Indian rosewood and Murphy Lab aging.

A 1959 Les Paul Standard is one of the most coveted and valuable guitars ever, but one particular example, “Greeny,” is famous for both its incredible story and its iconic sound. Originally owned by Peter Green, Greeny was used throughout his time with Fleetwood Mac and started as a bright cherry red sunburst, but after countless shows, it faded to a pale-yellow color. Greeny’s distinctive sound is partially from the out-of-phase middle switch position due to the neck pickup’s reversed magnetic polarity. In the 1970s, Peter sold Greeny to Gary Moore, who used it for three decades with Thin Lizzy and as a solo artist, even recording an album titled “Blues for Greeny.” After years together, Greeny was sold and temporarily retired, left waiting for a chance to return to the stage.

Now owned by Kirk Hammett, Greeny has officially passed through the hands of three legendary guitarists. Now you can add your own chapter to the legend of Greeny.

Kirk is one of my favorite musicians....but not because of his music alone. he has such a beautiful soul. he doesnt try to play the role of the hard ass; being his own true self is why i really admire him. what a giving, wonderful person he is!

Gary Moores Blues Alive performance was the reason I wanted a trans amber 95 classic. Still have it 28 years later. If you haven’t seen that performance, it’s one of the greatest musical performances EVER!

"If people wanna play it, even complete strangers, sure, play it all you want"
Ok Kirk I want to play it. Forever please. For the rest of my days will do. Drop it off tonight, ok? Thanks.

I can understand why Kirk loves that guitar but why anyone would spend $20k for a replica is beyond me

Honestly, Kirk can't hold a candle to Gary playing wise but it's awesome that this instrument didn't go to a collector who'd just lock it up. I saw this guitar live(with Kirk), amazing.

Gibson, y'all did such an immaculate job on my 2018 Standard that I no longer covet any other guitar on the face of this planet. Not Greeny, Pearly Gates, Pagey's #1 & #2... no other guitar could match or replace the instrument y'all made for me.

It's been a 30 year dream for me since first seeing Slash wield it on MTV or seeing mom's Frampton Comes Alive record up to now when I can reach in the case and pull out the guitar I had manifested over so many years. I can't thank y'all enough. ❤

the legacy of this guitar will last forever. Gibson killed it with this and beyond. this is why Gibson will forever be my favorite.

I've heard Kirk talk about this guitar at length in previous interviews. I never heard him mention that he'd noticed the guitar as a kid and thought about wanting it. That's gotta be awesome to finally own something like that. Be like me owning one of Hetfield's Ken Lawrence explorers. The one he used in the late 90s early 2000s specifically is my dream guitar.

To me this Guitar is called " the Greeny " for a reason nobody produced sutch beautifull solos on it than Peter Green

Gibson TV should do a The Collection with either James Hetfield or Kirk Hammett. Who agrees?

This guitar has just transitioned to another level. lets be real if some dude that was looking to stick it in a museum we'd all be gutted. Great to see it go to another guitar player...

Personally i dont really like greeny getting called kirks guitar ( no hate against kirk) since if you look at its legacy, with gary moore (imo the best guitarist of all time). gary made that guitar sing like no other instrument or guitarist can, gary had the most outstanding solos, the greatest melodies and songs ive heard. John norum once said "when you listen to gary it makes you feel someting, someting like no other guitarist can" and i think that summs up how great gary was. and before gary there were peter green in the early stages of fleetwood mac.
