Everyone also seems to forget that just half a year ago, it was also KH that said "the age of active pickups is over". This seems to be consistent with his current tastes. Dude is getting older and likes passives/stuff with collectibility now.

The most hilarious part is the “distressed” look they add by intentionally tearing up the finish. When I buy a new guitar, I want it to look new. I’ve been playing for 30 years, and my guitars have very few dings, scratches, and dents on them because I take care of them. I can’t imagine paying more for such a look.

Just like Lukather, Kirk has soured on EMGs and has moved to PAF style humbuckers. Especially after acquiring Peter Green's Les Paul

He put the EMG’s in right when he bought the guitar in 1988/1989. After the black album tour the hardware was changed to black but the tuners were Sperzel locking tuners. Both components are something Gibson really avoids using.

If it had EMGs it would need two 9V batteries. One for the piezo preamp, and then another for the active EMG pickups.
