The Honda Super Cub (or C125) is the best selling motor* vehicle in the world. And while I understand how it could have been so popular, these days there are more exciting, easier-to-ride, and more practical options out there, even within Honda's stable.

The rider questioned why the bike doesn't have a normal clutch lever.
The idea of the Cub/Super Cub was to be a simple and efficient inner-city delivery vehicle.
Given that, the idea was that the other hand would be busy holding the package, so they designed a semi-automatic transmission for it.

This is why there's no clutch lever to activate.

Every truck and SUV review from now on should include how well you can pack a Super Cub in it.

You can modulate the clutch by how slow you let your heal up on the shift pedal. It takes a little bit to get used to but when you do it's fun.

I’ve been riding 800 pound HD’s forever and I can’t wait to buy a 2019 with 19 miles on it soon. A small Honda S65 was my first bike… reliable and fun, NO oil leaks and treacherous vibration!

The supercub makes more sense in its time. It was an alternative to the pre-cvt scooters of the time that allowed one handed riding for deliveries. Those larger wheels were meant for poor or unpaved roads. But on the flip side, features like the step-through frame, front faring, and double-ended shifter were for keeping the rider clean. Rugged, civilized, and classless; all in one package!

Nowadays, for bumming around town, a scooter is arguably better. But there is niche for a small bike that can handle rougher roads better than a scooter. (That said I'm glossing over the CT125. It's for a different role, and the difficulty getting one even now speaks for itself)

Just bought this exact Super Cub for my wife and daughter. I have a couple of Royal Enfield's that my son and I ride. Northern Michigan has perfect roads for relaxed rides on this type of bike.

The very concept behind the Cub (then and now) is AWESOME. It blurs the line between "Motorcycle" and "Scooter" to make it its own thing. The Cub will always be COOL!

I have a Vespa and a Super Cub and I have to say they just serve different purposes for me. The Super Cub does really well on bumpy roads and on longer rides it gives you something to do with the shift lever while still being comfy to ride in town. Equipped with the right luggage system, it can carry everything you need for bike travel. And then there's the super low fuel consumption, light weight and great looks.

US-DOT regulations make it a little more challenging to ride. Every other region has the reverse shift pattern (toe down, shift up) and no lockout on the far side of 4th. So 1, 2, 3, 4, N, 1.. using only toe shifter is how the majority of riding takes place on level ground.

The semiautomatic is for having fun while not needing two hands to ride it. It's a middle ground between motorcycle and scooter. It's like a bicycle in a sense.

More stable than a scooter, it’s the best selling vehicle of all time for a reason 👍 keep on making them Honda.

The Cub doesn't have a clutch because in the original design, the rider needed to be able to carry goods for delivery.

I like it, nothing ever wrong with bringing back the Classic retro Style.

I'm buying one tomorrow for my business. Delivering RV's and having this reliable beast on a hitch carrier so I can go home, Lol.

Very interesting observations, thanks! Your description of the shifting process puts me in mind of shifting hub gears on bicycles, especially the old school ones like Sturmey Archer; when you’re ready to shift you need to ease up on pedalling, or even stop before changing.

You can actuate the clutch by manipulating the pre-travel before hitting the shifting wall. Basically, the first half of the foot actuation is the clutch, and the next half is the actual shift.
