How to CAST ON Stitches in Knitting | Long Tail Cast On Method | Lesson for Beginners

This knitting tutorial shows you how to do the simple 'long tail' casting on technique, which is where you use a long yarn tail to add stitches to your needles at the beginning of a project.

I show you how to estimate how long the yarn tail needs to be, how to do the slingshot position, and how to do this method without making a slip knot to begin with.

Along with the 'knitted cast on' this is one of the most popular cast ons, and is definitely my most-used.

I hope you find this useful!

Well done, thorough and detailed. I could knit this based on your instruction after watching it, and I know nothing about knitting.

Thanks. I can never remember how to cast on--I learned to knit at age 52 or so.
That looks like a Knitpicks needle. I have way too many of them, especially in sizes 1, 2 and 3 which are way too small for me even when I was knitting socks. I knit really tight, so I need bigger spears.

Is it normal for there to be a bunch of excess yarn in between each stitch as you begin to work on the next row after casting on? With every stitch I make this piece of yarn gets longer

so when i do it with the 12 inch for every 20 stitches, it comes out at 36 inches. But when i do the wrap around it comes out 3 times as large. I am so confused

I can't tell from the video which yarn goes to the ball of yarn and which goes to the long tail. Very confusing
