Summary of rabies:

- It is a virus
- It is usually fatal
- On a global scale there are around 60,000 deaths from rabies each year, with 95% of human deaths occurring in Asia and Africa.

What animals are affected?

Rabies primarily affects mammals which are warm-blooded animals with fur -- and technically any mammal can get rabies, including people.

In summary, the biggest risk globally for contracting rabies is by far and away from DOGS, in the USA bats, skunks, racoons and foxes carry significant rabies risk and these animals can infect domestic pets like dogs and cats or livestock – with the risk increasing if your pet is unvaccinated.

If you have any concerns or uncertainties following contact with an animal – especially if it has bitten you or an open wound or cut has been exposed then you should consult your health provider.

POSSIBLE CLUES AN ANIMAL MIGHT HAVE RABIES:

You can’t tell if an animal has rabies by just looking at it—the only way to know for sure if an animal has rabies is to perform testing in a lab, but possible clues might include:

• general sickness
• problems swallowing
• excessive drool or saliva
• an animal that is overly aggressive
• an animal that bites at imaginary objects
• a wild animal that appears tamer than you would normally expect
• an animal that’s having trouble moving or may even be paralyzed – for example a bat that is on the ground

3 WAYS TO TRY PREVENT RABIES:

1. First, make sure your pets get regular rabies vaccines.
2. Always try keep pets away from wild animals.
3. If you’ve noticed stray animals in your neighborhood call animal control to safely remove them – don’t try do it yourself.

Saw a rabid raccoon pup one day. It was staggering around at 2 o’clock. It looked drunk. Was gagging a lot. Tried lunging at us humans and fell into a creek and drowned. It was pretty sad

From numerous studies conducted on rabid dogs, cats, and ferrets, we know that when the rabies virus isintroduced into a muscle through a bite from another animal, it travels from the site of the bite to the brain by moving within nerves. The animal does not appear ill during this time.

The time between the bite and the appearance of symptoms is called the incubation period and it may last for weeks to months. A bite by the animal during the incubation period does not carry a risk of rabies because the virus has not yet made it to the saliva.

I was scratched by a litter of black kittens a few days ago and when I asked the staff if they were vaccinated, she said yes and today they are getting there rabies shots. Today?! Yeah, that’s reassuring! This was in a shelter and the kittens were brought in semi-feral They looked healthy and very energetic!

This was pretty educational, and maybe we can all try to keep our and our pets distances from these animals 👌

So to clarify, if the animal isn’t showing signs of rabies, it won’t infect you? The rabies is in the incubation period? It has to infect the animal’s mouth first?

Little late on this...but you missed a HUGE wildlife vector in the USA: opossums. Rabid opossums turn up more in urban environments than the others mentioned, and a big clue to alert you to rabies in them is that they're almost totally nocturnal. If you see one out in the daytime, the smart thing to do is to avoid it...even if it isn't displaying the typical rabies symptoms.

Opossums range widely across the USA, but they're most common in the East, the South, and the lower Midwest. And yes...this is from experience; some years ago, I had to call the police (best thing to do in the USA) and report one that was moving back and forth in my driveway before stumbling out in the street and seizing up completely. In town. At 10 AM. So this is not a rural thing...if you live in a city, you can still commonly cross paths with rabies vectors.

I almost fainted because this sounds a lot like how my sister’s dog has been acting after being outside for way longer than we would ever leave any dog outside oh boy😔

How does the rabies get into you from a scratch? I thought it was only from the saliva? I can understand if the animal was licking its paws before scratching you?

My cat brought a gerbil inside the house 3 weeks. It was afraid for its life and we let it go. Then it ran away. Do Gerbils carry rabies? I heard of they would even get rabies they wouldn’t survive the bite. Cat hasn’t shown any symptoms.

I got bit by a cat yesterday who was showing no obvious signs of rabies, but randomly turned aggressive after I pet him in a specific spot. Do I have it?
Edit: Also I only met him the day before yesterday and yesterday.
