Protecting the Public! The purpose of the ten-day period is to determine if rabies virus could have been in the animal's saliva at the time of the bite. An animal infected with rabies and shedding virus will certainly be dead within ten days. There is no test for rabies in a living animal but since we know that death follows quickly after the virus becomes contagious, a living animal can be confined for 10 days. If the animal is still alive 10 days after biting a person, then the bite could not have transmitted rabies.

Always seek medical attention if you are bitten by an animal, even a cute little friend!

Laws regarding biting animals and rabies vaccination are highly regional.

Rabies vaccination protocols are typically controlled by municipal regulations. Most communities legally require vaccination of all cats and dogs and ferrets.

Thank you for this video. Nearly all other ones are not as properly informative.

Ok. This is old post - hope still read. This is odd- in MN this year 2004. I was told feral cat could not be seen by ANY veterinarian (she bit me being transferred from large kennel to travel kennel to go to spay apt, through leather gloves). This was not aggression- but protecting kittens in kennel and FEAR- had not even hissed before this.I took her to her appointment and told them of the bite and they wouldn’t even look at her. I was told to call state health dept. They said they couldn’t see cat until quarantine over. So no one has even checked for a chip which could tell us if she had a home and a rabies shot! She’s very young. This is the most aggravating, part! I had an apt with another vet for her shots, and they too said she could not be seen until after quarantine. The health dept told me to watch her in a kennel in home quarantine for 10 days and then If she wasn’t dead, I didn’t need rabies shots. Never said anything about being cleared by a vet. So. Now I am very confused, as not only is cat in quarantine for rabies, We still don’t know if she is sick from more likely issues in MN.

I want to remind people if they can’t afford healthcare because no insurance and are bitten on THEIR home property and have home insurance, they may get some coverage through that( though usually high deductible). Also, this is a public health issue so contact your state health department for advice. The advice on YouTube seems confusing!

If the animal has been kept in quarantine for the full 10 days, and the animal has not shown any signs of rabies, is that a 100% sign that it has no rabies? I heard for humans it can take months to show symptoms? Is 10 days the case for domesticated animals?

In MN, if your dog has been put on a 10 day rabies quarantine, depite being vaccinated, are you required to have a veterinarian examination before you can be fully released from quarantine? I know animal control is the only one that can lift the Quarantine yet is it required that the owner sees a vet or do anything other than get permission from the officer in order to go back to normal activity?

Hello everyone! A Puppy 🐕(unvaccinated stray dog) bit me in the thigh 5 days ago, i am still observing the dog. I did take a shot 💉 for rabies vaccine (1 dose out of 5) and i developed moderate side effects(hives all over the body) because of the vaccine. My question is: → Is it possible for a rabid dog to survive 10 days?
