Just What Is Common Sense?

✏️ 'Common sense' is frequently suggested, often missing, and rarely defined. I'll take a look at some of what I feel are the characteristics of common sense.

Good points, all of them. The one thing I have adopted that I firmly believe in is the fact that common sense is no longer what it used to be. Common sense these days is more opinion based, or based on feelings rather than fact. I prefer to use the term good sense. It is more applicable these days since I feel that common sense is not necessarily good sense, and to most(?) of us, good sense does not necessarily mean that it is common sense any more. Hope this makes sense!

Common sense is simply our brain's way of making connections between commonalities within different scenarios; so it does not need to use as much brainpower. For example... you have learned knowledge that cars upon the road, moving in your direction pose a threat; but it is due to your common sense, that you can extrapolate that any fast-moving object on the road poses the same threat and the common link between the car and another object is its speed. Common sense is the ability to use knowledge in another area, this is why we learned to use tools.

Why is it called common sense when it's quite the opposite of 'common'

Too good to be true... you still need common knowledge of the fact...
You have to have knowledge about how a machine operates....
You have to trust the sense of others...they could be wrong...
We are overlooking that fact and base that on assumptions

I think that critical thinking is lacking and without critical thinking one can’t have common sense.
