10. Cinderella’s Secret Room
Disney's Magic Kingdom is a special place but did you know there is a secret hotel room inside the park? Originally built for Walt Disney and his family, the iconic Cinderella’s Castle has a secret suite. With a 24 hour concierge, pumpkin murals, and a clock that perpetually reads 11:59 PM, the secret suite can sleep six and is filled with antique furniture from the 17th century.
9. Secret Tunnels
With rumours of secret tunnels buried beneath the Magic Kingdom, it might surprise you to know that the rumours are in fact true. With 392,000 ft.² underground corridors, staff and characters are allowed to move freely under the park without having to spoil the magic for visitors. The legend states that Walt Disney got the idea when he saw a cowboy walking through Tomorrowland to get to his home in Frontierland.
8. The Haunted Apartment
Other rumours of a haunted apartment above the firehouse on Main Street are another secret of the Magic Kingdom. Built for Walt Disney himself for the creator to stay at instead of having to make long drives home late at night, Disney lived and worked there for many months with some believing that the apartment is haunted by the ghost of Walt today.
7. A Final Resting Place
For over 10 years, rumours circled around the idea that people would bring the ashes of their loved ones to scatter them at Disneyland and Disney World. An article in the Wall Street Journal confirmed the urban legend and the fact that it happens on a monthly basis. Custodians at Disney parks said they have taken part in cleaning up human remains from a number of families who spread the ashes of their departed family members of the park.
6. Real Skulls
Skull and crossbones go hand-in-hand especially The Pirates of the Caribbean exhibit at Disney World. But it seems that some of the skeletal pirates in the attraction were once made from real human remains. A former Disney employee also admitted that some of the real skulls are still there.
5. Smaller Than It Seems
To keep up the appearance of the Magic Kingdom, forced perspective is used in a number of structures in the park to give it a larger-than-life feeling. From the castle in Beauty and the Beast to Sleeping Beauty’s Castle, forced perspective is an illusion that tricks the eyes into thinking something is bigger than it seems.
4. Going to Disney Jail
Even though it is supposed to be the happiest place on earth, some guests at Disney World and Disneyland end up in Disney jail. Undercover cops and security guards roam the park to reprimand uncooperative guests and for those who are a little more aggressive, they may end up in Disney jail.
3. Abandoned Water Park
In 1976, Disney debuted their first ever water park at their Florida park. River Country was promoted as having slides, river rafting, rope swings and picnic areas for visitors to enjoy. Back in the day, Walt Disney World was much smaller than the park you know and love today. And although some old favorites like the Haunted Mansion and other attractions have been there since the beginning, River Country was a first.
2. Fake American Flags
A prominent feature at the theme park, the American flags lining Main Street are an unmistakable sight. But the flags do not have to be lowered and raised on a daily basis. And the reason may surprise you.
1. Secrets from the Galaxy’s Edge
When Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge opened at Disneyland, there was a lot of fanfare. With 40 years worth of the movie franchise to bring to life, it makes sense that there were massive line-ups, mega merchandise and much hype from those who love everything to do with George Lucas’ space opera universe.
