Imagine living in a country where you can't walk or take public transport to school.

In rural areas public buses are scheduled for school. You are not picked up however. And anyone with a valid ticket can ride.

For a german growing up in the countryside this is typical berlin centrism.
Public transport in germany is awful outside of the big citys. Madatory bus tickets used to be extremly expensive.
Traveling to school is a chore for most younger stundents where a 5 mile trip to school can easily take you an hour to complete with multiple busses because there are no specific school busses.
Most kids ditch the bus when they turn 15 and get a motorscooter license where they become a road hazard because they are only allowed to drive 15mph.

As an Ohioan…jealous. We only have one major city that utilizes trains for public transport. The rest of the state just has buses and only big cities have efficient systems.

Actually, here in Jalisco, Mexico, every semester we can get a student card with 50% of discount, or, another card with free 200 tickets, which you can use it for both trains and buses.

(btw, a ticket normally costs 9.50MXN, less than a half of dollar)

Berlin is the exception, not the rule. Public transport is good in basically every big city but a challenge in rural areas.

I (Germany) walked to elementary school by myself, like everyone else in my class. Fresh air and movement is not gonna kill anyone. For high school (in my case 8 kms away) we took public transportation or the bike and later motorbikes.

I am from a bigger city in Germany…I had to change bus and tram 3 times to go to school and from the 10th grade on I needed to pay for my ticket 😢

Students tickets are not for free, but they are a lot cheaper than regular tickets, so mostly everyone can afford them. And in really bad cases, I think the government will cover that up.

This is Germany and not whole Europe especially here on Eastern/Central part. Yes there is public transport but itd crappy buses from 20yrs ago, no its not free, its always overcrowded, roads are shitty so it takes longer to get there and its not safe and people get oftencin fights. Thats true reality of mostly none EU countries.

Not all students get a free ticket . If your parents earn enough they say that your parents can pay for the ticket or you're not far enough away from the school so they tell you to walk . Please don't spread wrong informations . Schokoticket kriegt halt eben NICHT jeder :/
