ASUS PG42UQ better than LG C2? Honest Review | Don’t Make A Mistake!

First impressions of the new Asus PG42UQ 42-inch monitor. I review the good and the and the bad of the monitor. This is based on the same panel as the LG C2, but now with supposedly less ABL (auto-dimming) and proper wake and sleep functions - aka act like a real monitor. It has 4K 138Hz HDMI 2.1 G-Sync VRR - is this the ultimate PC, Console & productivity Monitor?

THE LG C2 glossy panel makes just the colours pop more and the sharpness as well

Thanks for the review and comparison. I originally bought the Asus but it kept getting delayed. I payed 2038€!! until I heard of the C2. Checked the prices and there it was. 999€ + 48 months prolonged guarantee + shipping = 1140€. I immediately canceled the Asus and bought the C2. Your video lets me rest easy with my decision! Thank you! :) (German prices btw.)

This is an EXCELLENT review, thank you so much! You kept it short, packed with the right information we all want to know, and you give a solid conclusion / opinion instead of leaving that to us by just naming pro's and con's!

Great work! 👏🏼

I own the C2 and recently bought the Asus for side by side comparison. If you aren't aware, the Asus has completely broken HDR, regardless of firmware. HDR is 100% washed out and not accurate in any way. Please see the discussion thread on Rtings for more information (Link below). I ultimately returned the Asus because too many issues with firmware and HDR being completely unusable at this time. I didn't mind the matte coating and SDR looks good due to higher nits than C2. However, for $400 more than the C2, I'm expecting flawless HDR and zero issues with firmware. Asus is releasing another firmware in mid Nov and hoping that HDR gets fixed, among other things. Until then, can't recommend the ASUS for media/gaming, only productivity. Final thought: I think the C3 will destroy ANY OLED monitor/TV released in 2023. LG will be increasing nits by 20-50% and it's possible they implement 25% more reflection reduction like they did in the FLEX. LG is making the C series more and more the best of both PC and TV worlds. CES is around the corner and committing to the Asus at this time is ill-advised. Phillips is also releasing a direct competitor to the Asus @ 42" OLED. 2023 will have plenty of screen options from OLED to Mini-LED.

I was extremely undecided about this monitor and the C2. This review really helped me out. Such a relief! Your video provided the most information I could find after days of research 👍

It's got the cooling to prevent burn in though and DP 1.4 so you are getting more than the C2 with this monitor. This is a proper monitor, the C2 is a TV, not a monitor so yea I'd spend an extra for some additional burn in prevention and a DO 1.4. Would hate to have burn in a TV that i'm using as a monitor (Static images if doing productivity)

This was on my wish list but when I found out it will have the matt finish that REALLY put me off. I had a CX since launch and prior to that tons of gaming monitors for years...Not only did the CX blow then all away but I discovered that Gloss was Boss! So I picked up a C2 when they dropped. But I like some of features PG42UQ offers, if only it was gloss and the stand wasn't so intrusive and it had all 2.1 HDMI ports, the C2 is cheaper, will fit any setup and is an amazing display with a few small PC related issues, that I can overlook. If you want the most out of your OLED in terms of immersion, the C2 is the right choice. I also disabled ABSL completely which stopped the random dimming when viewing documents. ABL is baked in and part of OLED protection.

Love the review! I have the C3 42 and I like it a lot better. Lets be honest, if youre running a 4k monitor then you will need a newer gen graphics card. The biggest factor for me was the screen coating. 138Hz vs 120Hz isnt very noticeable.

Well said and honest I tried both and agree with 100%

Great review! I'm using this right now for productivity (mostly) but I do also have my consoles connected. For gaming it's been great, I've not had any issues using the 2.1 ports for 120hz on either console. That said, as my main productivity monitor this will probably have to go back because of the awful ABL (even as I type this the screen is dimming) lol. It's quite unfortunate, really looked forward to enjoying this monitor long-term and I still think anyone who is purchasing solely for gaming will be pleased but as far as productivity on PC it's just not possible with the current screen dimming (running firmware V33 atm).

Nice review. FYI, the firmware issue fixes the issue with ABL in SDR mode. In HDR, you can disable the screen saver function to mitigate auto dimming though it WILL still engage ABL on full field bright scenes. Not as dramatic as the CX, 1, or 2 though.

Hi - Noticed you showed yourself video editing. I was wondering if you have issues uploading captured HDR footage to your editing software in a single monitor setup like this? Most setups seem to be 2 monitors minimum and have to use a "DeckLink Mini Monitor 4K" to get the HDR content into e.g. Adobe or DaVinci - I only found out about this today!

I've done casual editing on DaVinci Resolve before on a traditional monitor. Last year I changed my single PC setup from 3 monitors to 1 single 42" LG OLED. I can capture HDR footage without issue, have tried uploading it etc and watching on other devices to check the colours etc, all good. What I didn't realise this would affect is my ability to edit within DR, I naively assumed it would all be smooth sailing! Today I uploaded the same HDR footage into DR and was surprised to see it washed out etc. I tried all sorts before resorting to the internet. I had no idea the workflow process was so complicated (amateur user) for using an OLED - it also appears that it's almost impossible where the OLED is your only monitor, i.e. the one you are going to record on, edit on and post process on.

My own fault, should have looked into it more last year. However now I'm stuck in an awkward spot, as I love the LG "monitor", picture quality when gaming etc is stunning. But it would appear I need to change something for the workflow of editing to work at all, shame.

the semi matte finish on this isn't bad at all. in fact it isn't even a noticeable factor unless you want it to be. i also have mine vesa mounted because i hate practically all monitor stands. 120hz for the C2 isn't enough. at all. not at screen of this size. you need fluid high refresh for a screen of this size. 138hz on the ROG isn't enough either, but at least its better. 175hz would have been better, and there's a massive difference in the feel and response for me in that range. 240hz is rumored to be around the corner, so that'll solve that. the ONLY downside is the pg42 has a firmware issue where it turns itself off in a way not related to any power saving mode. it just goes into a deep sleep state mid game and not even the menu OSD shows up. the only way ive found to turn it back on is to use the remote and power on/off, or go into nvidia control panel (if you have dual monitors) and set the refresh rate to something else, which will "re-flash" the monitor and wake it, and then decline the changes so it stays at the same refresh you had before. it HAS turned off on me and caused me to die in game, but honestly i would have died anyway eventually lol. the currently listed firmware on the ROG site is V033, while the monitor ships with V035, so unless i want to roll back, i'll have to just deal with it for a while longer.

My man your video was the most honest and the most detailed showing the good and the bad of this Asus monitor. I was undecided on getting this one or the C2 and as of this moment im leaning towards the C2 though i would be mainly using it for video editing and wondering if the C2 would be a good choice for me or the Asus PG42UQ because of its built in Heat sink which would help alot with burn in.
