Self-Defense Mistake - Don't Just Stand There!

Many people make a BIG mistake in self-defense training... don't be one of them! Join Ando and Sifu Randy Brown for a quick tip that might save you from trouble.

Now for the big self-defense mistake... standing still when you practice techniques with a partner! That's just not realistic!

Yes, when you first learn self-defense techniques, it's natural to stand still. This approach gives you time to understand what an attack feels like and allows you to coordinate your body movements.

But that's just the first step!

Remember this advice from Sifu Randy-- slow to learn, fast to test! In other words, once you feel your understanding of a self-defense technique is solid, it's time to start speeding up and adding more pressure.

The first step should be to turn your static attack into a moving attack. Whether it's a push, punch, or grab, very few attackers are going to just stand there. They are gong to move!

Plus, consider that as an attacker rushes at you, a strong punch or palm heel to the face may not be enough to stop them. It's more likely that they will keep moving forward and collide with you.

Remember Conor McGregor versus Jose Aldo? Conor knocked Jose out cold, but he still got hit! Jose threw a punch as he fell forward and connected. It just happens that Conor was smart enough to get out of the way of his falling opponent.

You be smart, too! Don't just stand there when you practice. Ask your partner to rush into your space.

The next step will be to start adding resistance. How much pressure you add is up to you!

Great stuff! I had an instructor that said, "Slow is smooth, smooth is fast, fast is deadly." I've hear that quite a bit in the knife combative community a lot. And that progression to the end I consider alive training, being static is dead and we're training to fight corpses...as far as I know...and I hope not.

This is why sparring is really important!

As one of my instructors used to say "This is just a lesson, it's not training yet" . Every sport or art has a version of it. You learn the form, then you apply it. One cannot say "Flailing falling force" without first studying the letter F. I personally learned this lesson on the mean streets of Sesame. R.I.P. Sifu Grover, gone too soon.

love the advice of slow to learn fast to test!

I have the theory that the reason for your channel being comparatively small is that it's too good. Nobody wants to share that secret knowledge.

Thanks for this great advice. It is so logical. After having watched this video a few times, getting out of the rail tracks became a reflex. Just printed in my subconscious!

Great information sir.
I have been told the same thing by my Martial Arts instructor. I understand and want to get out of the way, but I still hesitate.
Also, these old bones dont move as fast as I want them to move. But I keep trying and practicing becuase I know tht I am faster than I was when I started. (Sorry for rambling on...) :-)
Thanks again for putting this information out there and your collaborations with other instructors is awesome!!

Great tip Ando, My master always tell me this: use the the attacker movement against him, and it's no way to do that when you are in the line fire, like the gun shut get out of the line fire and do what you have to do. h_h

This is really simple metaphor for most martial arts. If you're fighting and squared up to the other guy you're on the railroad tracks. The thing that we try to hammer in to everyone is get the hell off the tracks

I really like that advice:"Get of out the way" Better than TOMOE NAGE the sacrifice move I kept doing again and again in Judo!

Great video sensei, i've also noticed some self defense systems teach people to throw knees when they get in the clinch nonstop like a machine gun when in reality as soon as you get in a clinch people either push you forward or try to wrestle you to the ground, doing this can lead to you ending on your butt.

Truth to that! The great majority of urban violence (at least here in my city) revolvs around drug addicts attacking people for their stuff and hate violence.... both instances that feels closer to war combat then from a street fight, since those attackers have no problem going all the way and are really not acepting the idea of not getting what they want.

Oh man, I am just laughing so damn hard! What a great video! Have you watched, 'Lie To Me' yet? Body Language would be a huge skill to have to be able to 'read' the minds of the bad guys. Before there is a need for any confrontation. Or to know how far this bad guy is willing to go or when he will try to kill you, or even how. So damn funny, Sensai Ando, I am still wiping the tears!!
