Corruption and Poverty: Equatorial Guinea

Показать описание
Equatorial Guinea is a country where immense oil wealth lines the pockets of a small elite while the vast majority of the 1.3 million population lives in poverty. Led by Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, who seized power in a military coup 45 years ago, the regime is known for its systematic repression of political opposition and civil society organisations. Despite this, Nguema has won all six presidential elections held since 1982, proclaiming at least 93% of the vote each time. His son, Vice President Teodorin, has embezzled millions of dollars from the country's coffers, leading to criminal convictions and the seizure of assets worth millions of Euros, dollars, and pounds. Despite holding elections every five years, Equatorial Guinea is categorised as an authoritarian regime, with only 18 out of the 55 countries in Africa considered democratic. This documentary explores the corrupt world of Equatorial Guinea, where even pop idols like Michael Jackson and the Bad tour are not immune to its tentacles. #EquatorialGuinea #TeodoroObiangNguemaMbasogo #TeodorinObiangNguema #MichaelJackson #BadTour #corruption #oilwealth #authoritarianregime #Africa
