The Richest Country in Mainland Africa

Equatorial Guinea is the richest country in mainland Africa by GDP per Capita, however, that wealth may not hold up as well as you might think. Thanks to an oppressive and corrupt regime, the booming economy is seemingly going to waste.

Man that's a VERY well-made video. It's unjust that you don't get hundreds of thousands of views espicially with this quality and amount of research you did on the subject.

I've always been suspicious of Equatorial Guinea having a high gdp/capita since I knew they had a dictator in the seat. This video enforces that high gdp/capita doesn't necessarily = good quality of living.

There's a book called "The Dictator's Handbook" (the book used in the video "rules for rulers") which gives good insight into that. Whenever a country has a lot of natural and is a dictatorship at the same time. The money usually goes to the dictator and his cronies before it reaches any public projects. That's why the gdp/capita of Equatorial Guinea is so high yet the population never gets any of that money. They suffer bad infrastructure, poor quality of living, frequent power cuts, etc... as you said.

Again I really like your video and videos of that type about different world countries. I know it sounds weird but I love to just stare at maps like GDP/Capita or HDI for a long time.

I liked and subscribed and I'm sure your channel will boom like every big infographic channel.

It does have the highest literary rate in Africa for children to people ages 24.
That’s a plus

Another huge problem with Equatorial Guinea was the legacy, Obiang's uncle Francisco Macias Nguema, who is the Pol Pot of Africa left for the country. As he was very anti-intellectual, even banning the word "intellectual", banning private education, and banning Western medicine and technology among other things. This resulted in 47% of the Equitorial Guinea population at the time being killed or fleeing the country (including most of its educated populatin)
