The bit about turning the pickups upside down was a Jerry Donahue trick from the days before guys like Seymour Duncan were making reverse-stagger pickups. He talked about it in an old issue of GP the ‘Pros Reply’ column. But it turns out that it can’t be done without lengthening the pickup wires and slightly enlarging the pickup routs in the body. These old guitars were not as valuable back then and players personal modifications were more tolerated. Today it’s worth the time, trouble and expense to restore them to original status where possible.

Any idea why the previous owner would flip the pickups? Must have been something going through his mind to go to the effort of chiseling out the pickup routes to do that! Great restoration job!
