I had 5 different Tibetan Mastiffs over 20 years. Deadly?? Well, all LGDs are capable of taking out large predators, but their true personality is one of deep loyalty and affection. So very attached to its flock, which includes your family, they are gentle and kind to all under their protection, from your cat, to your baby.
But make no mistake that lazy looking TM will jump up instantly if an intruder shows up.
The biggest problem the suburban owner will encounter is the constant barking. Seriously they wont shut up and you can forget about the bark collars. If noise is going to be an issue, PLEASE:
DO NOT GET AN LGD.
There are so many breeds better suited to civilization and they are just as dedicated to protecting your family.
Getting any dog should not be an impulse buy. Do the research, talk to owners, prepare your yard and house, and socialize your dogs.

I had an Irish Wolfhound who tipped the scales at 219 pounds. Let’s just say he had a healthy appetite. The vet recorded the weight at 100 kg. I put him on a strict diet for three months and got him down to a svelte 182 pounds. He was a gaunt 160 when he passed away at 8 years and seven months old.

That fur also protects it from wolves and other predators. Today’s Newfoundland dogs are descended from Tibetan mastiffs, although the Newfoundland has a much sweeter temperament. So if you want a dog that looks like a Tibetan mastiff, but that has a much sweeter temperament then get a Newfoundland dog.
