Vintage Sewing Project - 1930s Suit Dress

I need a warm 1930s black suit dress. Time to sew a little black dress!
Welcome to my channel, where fashion over 40 meets the perfect Little Black Dress journey! In this series, we explore historical little black dresses from various decades and showcase how to find the perfect LBD for every occasion. Today, we're diving into the world of 1930s vintage fashion with a lookbook that features a stunning dress I'm sewing.

Join me as I take on the challenge of sewing a Haslam System of Dresscutting, Book of Draftings No. 14, page 98, figure 7, circa 1937 dress using a luxurious black wool blend woven fabric. This project is pushing the boundaries of my sewing skills, making it the most complicated and advanced one I've ever embarked upon. With over nine intricate points of construction converging at the neck, it's a true sewing adventure.

The yoke or collar of the dress has posed an interesting challenge – it needs to overlap in a unique way to sit just right. This unexpected overlap has given me the perfect opportunity to showcase a beautiful vintage brooch, and I couldn't be more excited. After all, any excuse to indulge in vintage jewelry is a fashionista's dream come true!

I've also incorporated some clever cutting techniques in this project, including a skirt partly cut on the bias and front/back center panels cut on the grain. The bodice is fitted with a dart under the front "vest" section, which surprisingly didn't need darting as the dart could be folded up and drafted closed.
