Sewing a 1930s day dress from vintage fabric | Vintage sewing project + sew with me

Today I am sewing a 1930s (1936 to be precise) day dress from some vintage 1950s fabric. This is a bit of a dream project because I've always wanted to sew something with a wisteria pattern as it is one of my favorite flowers. I used an authentic vintage sewing pattern Hollywood 1619.

My great grandma sewed her own clothes in the 1930s. My family split into pieces after her death and someone got all her cool fabric and patterns. You did a great job.

Very pretty, the white piping really elevates this dress!!! The drag issues are because you need more room in the bodice. If you measure from the shoulder down over the bust line to your under bust that will give you length that you need for this pattern piece (then add seam allowance). It will mean reducing the waist band by the same amount that you add to the bodice to maintain the proportions of the dress. I hope that this helps you.
I have been sewing for over 45 years now and fitting a garment can be tricky and annoying but worth it. I really enjoy watching your sewing and the cost breakdown. To make our own bespoke clothes can be expensive but it is so enjoyable to create clothes that express our personality and style. My Nana taught me to sew. She and her sisters made all their own clothes and hats, I am still in awe of them.

Ida Lupino is great. Enjoy many of her films. Super cute pattern design and flowers. Came out so cute! The piping is fantastic! I also really like and prefer unprinted patterns. I like how the older patterns are one size and I like not having all the printing on it.

Would love a video tour of your Gunnesax patterns. I've never sewed any, but I wore that style of dresses back when I was a little girl in the 80s, so I always think the patterns look so fun!

Ida Lupino was a groundbreaking hollywood director back when women were excluded from creator roles. Any of her films would be cool to see.

I was very impressed with your sewing detail and skills. I love the dress it turned out so cute. Pretty fabric and a great pattern. More young people need to learn to sew and enjoy making your own clothes in your own style.

I have never seen sleeves done this way before-- it is very interesting! I like the piping details also. I love the photo shoot in front of the beautiful wisteria!

Vertical drag lines mean that it's a horizontal fitting issue. Horizontal drag lines mean it's a vertical fitting issue. That line is most likely the bust being a tad too short which you already know about. 😁

Oh how pretty 😍 I always enjoy your videos so much. I love the piping and my Singer manual says the zipper foot IS for piping too!!! I am going to use some soon, I really like this look. I have been contemplating making a dress or 2 in this style. Great for church. I am glad my buttonhole maker is my friend too.
The Wisteria timing?? Spot on!!❤❤❤

Love all the wonderful details and touches. I’ve been finding some lovely vintage ribbon trims and every time I see you add the trim details it excites and encourages me to get creative in using them. All the ideas are swirling 😊

Love the piping details you added! It really brings the design of the dress together and highlights the small details that would probably get lost without that piping contrast.
