Which makes the Nevera and other electric hypercars more impressive

I guess this is why hybrid cars are favoured a lot. mix of electric acceleration and combustion top speed

The Porsche Taycan Has a 2 speed gearvox while being an EV, so you can feel the shift and hear the electric motor drop in revs at higher speeds

Tbf, gas cars don't have high top speeds by design, but by quirk. Their high gear count exists to let the engine turn slowly and efficiently at highway speeds, not to make the car faster.

Honestly the 202mph for the hellcat is crazy impressive considering it's about as aerodynamic as a brick 😂

The lack of transmission is also actually why even normal EVs have so much power. It's much cheaper to put in a fuckoff massive motor that works fine at most speeds than a transmission and a smaller motor.

Electric motors also can deliver the perfect amount of power, with modern sensors and ecus, they can adjust their output thousands of times in a second to put down the maximum amount of power that traction allows, and the output on an electric motor can be much more finely controlled, compared to combustion engines which usually use the braked or cut power to regain traction, but this takes more time and is less efficient and less accurate.

one thing not mentioned in the video, gas engines typically top out at 8-9k rpm at the highest while a standard ev motor can go to 30-40k they are easily capable of running at very high top speeds just like gas cars but the energy consumption goes up exponentially and the subsystems cannot deliver the power to reach those higher speeds yet, gearing is a bandaid for that problem but eventually we will have evs that can go just as fast as gas cars but with no gears at all (which is the most efficient option)

The power curve can be combatted with multi winding motors that have different windings for different speed ranges.

Let's be honest, apart from in Germany you aren't going to use 130 mph

Rimac Nevera is a hypercar and one of 2 EVs I like and consider getting if I had money, it's looking great, amazing acceration and top speed higher than most of the cars without any gearbox. The second EV on my list is McMurthy Speirling with lower top speed, insane acceleration and grip like F1.

Cool info, good to think about.

As a hybrid driver, I take off from a stop light way more often than need 150+ kmh. Instant torque is a thing of beauty.

The GM ev-1 made in 1996 had a low enough drag coefficient that unrestricted it could do 201 wothout a gearbox

Another factor is electric motors have a power curve opposite of internal combustion gas engines, making power strongest at low speed while rapidly dropping off as rpm increases.

They put in programing that causes the vehicle to not accelerate past a set speed. Someone that knows how to change this parameter can remove it or raise it. Trucking companies do this to company semi-trucks to lower the chances of speeding tickets. Most of the time they set the truck to not go faster than 65 mph. As a good deal of US states the interstate speed is 65 mph.

A fun hidden part of this video, when he says “you’re basically doing top speed in first gear” he cute to a koenigsegg regera, which if you didn’t know, has a 1 speed transmission

The 2 main issues are AWD power distribution, and tire speed rating. A lot of EVs come standard with tires with lower speed ratings, which leads to low governors. AWD systems also limit top end performance, especially the more evenly distributed the power is for front to rears.

To be fair I care a lot more about acceleration than top speed because acceleration is something that most people will actually use. when's the last time you went over 100 mph even on a track?
Also in my opinion speed is boring, it's like something being spicy with no or bad taste

It's more to save tires, battery & other power train items. Drag increase with the square of velocity.

Because the batteries would literally be flat within 30mins if you had a better gear ratio that's why. Motors are amazing at spooling up and maintaining a set rpm compared to a ICE, but require a constant power source to remain on for long.

The regera shot while saying top speed in first gear is so accurate to how the car works
