NYT did an article on her and her group and apparently she was once attacked by a small group of pickpocketers and no one stopped to help her. and she’s still out there doing this to help others. what a bad ass.

I've been in Venice 20 times at least, the problem for local police is that basically even if they stop them they have to release these people right after and pickpocketers know that and take advantage of being almost untouchable from Italian law. Big shout out to the lady for the FREE service that she does in order to keep the city safe from these scumbags. Grazie Signora

I am from Venice, whenever my partner from the UK visits Venice I have to remind him how bad the pick pocket problem is. Teaching him the ways of “occio al taccuin” if you’re planning on visiting Venice or any main city in Italy please keep your valuables in a small bag then use a bandana or a scarf to tie that bag down the middle, it means that it would stay closed and someone would need to physically try to untie the fabric to access your valuables, please keep as little in your pockets as you can, and if you want to wear a bag pack please make sure you wear it round your front and keep your valuables in the hidden pockets someone cannot discretely access when you’re distracted. And most important of all, try to keep an eye on your surroundings and if you or your bag gets bumped into (think of the busy places like Rialto, or the vaporetti )- please check everything is still there.

If you’re at the beach in Lido, Treporti, Jesolo, Punta sabbioni etc and you fancy a walk - do not leave your bag unattended, I tend to bring the exact amount of cash I need when I go to the beach and a waterproof pouch for my phone and the money. If you’re a solo traveller make sure that if you’re leaving your bag unattended you’re just leaving your water bottles and snacks, if you’re in a group make sure there’s always a friend or family member guarding those bags. Stay safe and happy travels!
