How to Measure 4 Litres, with a 5 Litre and 3 Litre Container - Step by Step Instructions - Tutorial

It is possible to measure 4 liters when you only have a 5 liter and a 3 liter containers . This principle also applies to measuring 4 gallons with a 5 gallon and 3 gallon containers. And measuring 4 ounces with a 5 ounce and 3 ounce bottle. Watch my video for all the details (by #HowToSolvePuzzles ).

I've used scale models of the 5 litre and 3 litre containers, so that the video runs for less time and it is easier to see what is happening. The same principle applies to measuring 4 gallons and 4 ounces, as these bottles are just scale models. This riddle has been made famous by the movie "Die Hard"

You can also do this the other way. Fill up the 5 liter container. Pour three liters from the 5 liter container into 3 liter container. Empty 3 liter container. Pour remaining two liters from 5 into 3 (there should now be two liters of liquid in 3 and one liter of free space). Now fill the 5, and pour one liter into the 3 liter container (which has 1 liter of free space). You now have four liters in the 5 liter container.

This has another solution too, 1st we fill 5L container then from 5L c. fill 3L container so in5L remains 2L then empty 3L container and with remained 2L in 5L container fill 3L container so we have 2L in 3L container then refill fully 5L c. and fill 1L into 3L container which one already has 2L so we could exactly know that we filled only 1L, thereby we have 4L in 5L container.

- Fill 5L then into 3L, dispose 3L and pour remaining 2l from 5L container into 3L
- Fill 5L again and top up 3L leaving 4L in the 5.

Another solution is
- Fill the 5L bottle
- Pour the 5L bottle into the 3L bottle. There should be 2L remaining in 5L bottle, and 3L in the 3L bottle
- Empty the 3L bottle
- Pour the 2L from the 5L bottle into the 3L bottle. There should be 2L in the 3L bottle
- Fill the 5L bottle
- Pour 1L from the 5L bottle into the 3L bottle. The 3L bottle is full, and there are 4L in the 5L bottle.
