How to Create a Tight Modern Lead Guitar Tone | Audio Production Tips

Hello internet!

Rob from A Minor Error and in this video I'll go through the process I go through to create a tight modern lead guitar tone. The processing you apply to whatever amp or plugin you're using is very important in narrowing the frequencies and getting the tone to work in a mix.

I LOVE to use Neural DSP's Archetype: Plini for my lead tones but there's loads of other amp sims out there that sound great and would totally work. If you'd like to see my specific settings on the amp sim, drop me a message and I can let you know exactly what mics and positioning I'm using.

The position of the mics on the cabs are probably the most important part to work on first. Any EQ moves you make, especially cuts to ringing frequencies are dependent on those mic placements on the cab. This is what makes reamping or recording a guitar amp live so tricky: if you don't know how to get the tone that will work in the mix you'll probably wind up making a mistake. Even IF you're an experienced engineer it might still be hard to know what mic placement with work best in a certain tune too. This is where software plugins really shine: it's quick and easy to tweak and experiment to find a tone that seems to fit the whole tune.

After EQ'ing using subtractive EQ moves, I like to dial a little bit of higher frequencies back in to get some of the brilliance and presence back into the sound. I've also been finding that using a dynamic EQ is a great way of making sure any palm muted notes are controlled and don't get out of control.

Dang man! Now I know for sure I don't know anything about mixing. Haha. I learned quite a few things from this. But wow, it seems overwhelming learning all this 😳

Are you using two mics for voice over? I hear comb filtering and quite a bit of room reverb.
