i bet this would be less of a problem if the game didn't label standard as the "default game mode." makes it sound like thats what everyone plays

I started 3 days ago. In standard. Im following a guide. Even after I watched your video I still dont know why would I start in league and not in standard. This game is so complex that I dont need 1 more complexity which is reseting everything. Im good in standard for now.

I started in standard. I like learning at my own pace and the lore. Tried my character and messed them up. Then started an earthquake jugg and really enjoy the game. For any new players - try playing with a controller. Really makes the game easier on your hands /wrists

Interestingly my advice to new players is to not worry about anything, not to look at any guides, and to have fun making their own character. New players really don't need to worry about trading or end game bosses or bricking their character or anything. The game is so complex that it is really worth exploring it slowly at your own pace, and then if you get hooked on the game and decide to take it seriously, its time to look up guides and a good build.

The experience of being a brand new player is unique and fun, I wouldn't want to rob someone of that

So from what I understand the only problem is other players having more currency and trading becomes unusable? if so that's fine by me, I'm treating this like a single player PVE game anyway I don't care for trading or having the optimal build

This sounds like advice for people who are gonna put at least a couple hours every day into it. I will probably not play POE for more than 2 or 3 hours a week. I won't get anywhere in a Season before it's over, so it's not like I'm "gaining an advantage."

I understand your point, but what if you started the game when the league is at half lifespan? Should you go in league mode anyway?

I've started in a league (Metamorph to be specific) and never finished act 10 in this first league. But it was great to get used to PoE and I was lucky that the first person I've been trading with was patient and willing to teach a newbie how trading works even though it was only a 1c trade.
Delirium was my first real league where I made it to T16 maps. I have never touched standard except for play testing new builds for an hour or so.

This is the exact mistake I did and ended up quitting before I reached 'end game '

I started in standard, because the person that introduced me to the game only ever plays standard. By the time the next league started about a month later, I was already becoming very frustrated with standard's economy, so I switched to league and pretty much never touched standard again.

This game's reliance on trading to function has always put me off it. But i'm glad there's an ARPG out there veterans can enjoy.

I started in standard but it was one week before Nemesis league started, then I jumped over to that and had a blast, Nemesis league was awesome . Now If I had to start over, I'd choose to play a league, especially the start of a league, seeing how a league unfolds, really helps a player understand that progression they need to make, it's not like other games, you have to push if you wanna get somewhere, you can't just float around and beat the endgame like TLI .

I started in standard. played for a while, jumped into an interesting league that had introduced upgrades i wanted to get for cheap. Once i got them i played my character back in standard again. Here and there I jumped into a league for a couple of weeks to grind out the bare minimum currency to grab one or two upgrades then went back to standard to play my main character once i obtained them (and they were super cheap). I've been playing the same build, same character since i started the game almost 3 years ago. The thought of re-grinding out a new character every league makes me want to vomit.... its simply not for me. I prefer to keep my progress and keep going forward. Not only that I'm a family man with a demanding job so, unlike streamers, I cant play games for 10 + hours a day to make a 3 month cycle remotely viable. I really enjoyed the journey to the top with my build, but its taken me so long, i never want to do it again. The only time ill truly start a new character and bring them back to 100 will be the launch of poe2, but then ill just play my main again after that's over because i've found the build that i really love. to each their own right?

Starting in Standard now is like being born and expecting to compete in a capitalist society without access to generational wealth💀

Just started and dove straight into ruthless sanctum. Not quite enough of a masochist to try hard-core but I'm fine with things being a little harder.

The way you pitch it makes sense. I’m really enjoying it so far but I did decide while I’m getting my feet under me to start in standard and wait for the next season to create a seasonal character. That being said if I was starting today I would have took your advice.

I started standard and am on my third character. Your video is motivating me to try a new build in league play.
A question: in standard my stash is shared among the characters I’ve played and is pretty full. A new league character starts with empty stash, correct? What happens to the accumulated items when the league ends? Is it dumped into the common standard stash? What happens if there’s not enough room?

Can anyone recommend a good inventory management video? I have pack rat tendencies!
