The Allegory of the Cave - Can You Handle the Truth?

The allegory of the cave is an incredible philosophical work because of the symbolic way Plato decided to illustrate the effect of knowledge on humans.

Undoubtedly this is an incredible text that echoes many visceral ideas that have troubled us throughout the history of mankind.

I remember taking a philosophy class in my second semester of college and it changed me life forever. It broke many paradigms.

Plato was definitely a badass philosopher, way ahead of his time (By the way, the original text is a conversation between Socrates and Glaucon - Plato's older brother. I had to edit the original so that the video has a better flow. Hope you liked it.)

This was beautiful! I'm currently focused on Plato in my philosophy class, and this brought things to life. Thank you!!

A bird that is born in a cage will think that flying is an illness.

As captivating and imprisoning our ignorance may be, the world that's out there is a lot more confusing and so one might actually prefer the comfort that came as a result of staying ignorant.

But while it may be overwhelming to see the world for the way it is at first, it is ultimately liberating.

I was reading this for my seminar class and this really helped me visualize the story. Great video!

Watching this I had an idea of Plato’s cave 2.0 which is more fitting and accurate to the conundrums we find ourselves in, there are two groups of captives, one group cannot see the shadows but hold the shapes to the fire, raised above the lower captives shackled by their feet only who are ignorant to the nature of the deceit of the higher group; the captives that would be elevated would feel smug, egotistical, and a false sense of justice; unknowing of the truth of the outside though thinking they are helping the lower captives through giving them something to speak about. When really they are captives themselves, elevated only superficially and not in reality as they are more so captives to their own avarice and delusions of helping the other captives. They would make fun of them and belittle them, make games of how much they can trick the lower captives, they would be bound tighter than the ignorant and innocent captives…

Excellent interpretation. I feel that I often leave the cave but I am drawn back into it simply because I know very few people that know there is a pathway out of the cave...or, and I hate to admit this, I like certain aspects of the cave. But, every time I leave the cave, I leave for longer periods. I first left the cave when I injured my lower back and it would not get better. I had been an avid athlete and I became couch bound...Western medicine completely failed me. I saw several different doctors who only had a small prism through which they could look and my injury didn't fall into the scope of their prism. Finally, after many years of physical and mental suffering, I found a non-medical solution (Hanna Somatics) and I realized how insanely narrow my view on health had been. I was trusting those false shadows being projected in front of me...telling me that I would likely have to "manage" my pain and that there was no solution. The solution is so simple that it's actually funny...you can see small children and all animals performing pandiculations which reset muscle length and keep them healthy and mobile...but there's no money in Somatics...or not enough to prop up the health care system which wants you to take meds and undergo unnecessary surgeries. Now, I try my best to remember this lesson. There are manipulators everywhere...some don't even know that they are part of a system of manipulation...good empathetic doctors and health care professionals that are unaware of natural solutions. Anyway, the allegory of the cave is thought provoking and relevant to the identity politics and mainstream propaganda that is constantly being thrown in our faces. It's all theater and once you figure this out, you become freer.

Thanks, I knew of ‘the cave’ but did not know it. Appreciated your summary explanation as I only part pieced together what I thought it meant until you straightened it out!

I think that the fire is the society which drives a burning illusory image into it's prisoners. It is beautiful. Keep up the good work.

Brilliant . Related to it in my own way . Reminds me of long bouts of depression looking out at the world outside the window . All the people passing by, wondering what more there was to their lives than the moments they pass my window everyday and wondering in what way I could re assert myself into the hustle and bustle rat race clockwork machinery that apart of I had a permanent singular glimpse of from my window .

Fantastic video! Thank you for making this. The visuals really help to illustrate the allegory Plato is making.

I’m in awe of someone who can basically derive this conclusion or observational analysis in the time period that this was written. Think about that for a sec 😮
