Books are a great way for foster parents to have age appropriate conversations about foster care and trauma with the kids in their care. Here are some that may help you with these conversations!

I also added in two books for adults :) one that i read as a first time parent, and also a resource book for all things related to food 💛

If you are having trouble clicking the link in the video, the book links have been provided below (affiliate)!

What kind of book do you think would help you?

As a former classroom teacher, I absolutely love seeing books used as a way to approach heavy topics!!!

Also, even teenagers will often connect to the language and themes in children’s books. It’s just awkward to suggest them because they are seen as little kids’ books. But if there is a younger child in the picture, as well, a good way to open up the interaction to the older kid is to ask them if they would like to be the reader, and the adult and younger kids are the listeners.

Thank you! I'm so honored! Thank you for sharing Love Me, Feed Me. I've been enjoying doing more webinars and trainings for foster parents recently. The reception for the book and this responsive message has been heart-warming. Recently after a training, a dad said, "I wish I knew this ten years ago!" There is a lot of preventable suffering in this really charged and complicated area of food, mealtimes, trauma, body image, and more!

We are in the process of getting approved to provide foster care and already have 2 bio kids (age 3 and 6). Do you know of any good books I could read with our bio kids ahead of welcoming a foster kid into our home to help them be more understanding? Maybe some of the ones you already mentioned would be good; I'll have to check them out.

I absolutely hate how many foster books portray foster kids as animals and pets. Foster kids already feel dehumanized and isolated, they don’t need to be treated as actual animals.

Would you be willing to video yourself reading one of the shorter ones for the kids, and how you use inflection in the lesson?

Hi Laura, thanks for the suggestions. I’ve bought 4 of them thus far and I’m very impressed. Will be reading them as bed time stories. 🤗

Hi! Best resource for tough child behaviors? Especially power struggles. I feel like the last few children I have had in my home I spend the whole day saying “If you don’t stop we are not going to xyz” and the day feels so negative or like I have to bribe to get through the day. I get very exhausted when all day boundaries are just constantly being pushed
