This tutorial shows how to back up and restore Proxmox virtual machines on a Synology NAS using NFS! The instructions also allow you to store your ISO images and other Proxmox data directly on your Synology NAS as well!

Excellent video Frank! I don't use proxmox personally but the video itself is excellent, clear and very well explained

you should add a disclaimer for backing up LXC. The backup will fail unless you login on the synology NAS as the admin-user, "sudo chmod 777 -R /volume1/proxmox" .

thank you for your video I backed up all VM on synology but I get an error when I try to back up pihole CT

Thanks alot! I would note that if you're backing up a CT you need to give the NAS folder specific permissions or allow EVERYONE or you'll get a permission denied error.

Wow you really helpmed me out with this video! I have one question though. What if your whole Proxmox server crasht (bad SSD for example) and you would have to restore from the automated backups from the synology nas; would you first have to create the VM's manually before restoring from the backup, or is it possible to restore VM's from snapshots without having to create the empty VM's itself first? Edit: I found out you can just go to your NFS share from proxmox, click the backup, choose Restore, and then start from scratch with the backup. This is awesome!

What are the steps to backup an iso from Proxmox to Synology? I don't see any easy way to do this. Also, when backing up the vm, it places it in a folder on the Synology called "dump" in the Proxmox share. Is there a way to tell it to place it in the "images" folder (for example) in the Proxmox share instead?

Just starting to learn Proxmox, is there a way to backup the Proxmox server configurations and not just the VMs?

So what exactly does PBS (Proxmox Backup Server) do more compared to your backup method?

What about i cases where the proxmox host itself crashed and went lost. How to restore then, because there are no VMs to select and then go to the backup tab... right?

Followed step by step but once in proxmox setting up NFS storage it does not give me the opportunity to ADD (not highlighted). Any idea why?

So what about backing up machines that are running? It seems this guide assumes the VM is shut down or did I misunderstand something?

How come and you used nfs instead of iscsi. NFS requires sync (slower) writes

Thanks for this video. I got this all working. But I notice every time Proxmox backs up on the Synology it does a full backup each time, no incremental backups. Isn't there a way to setup deduplication on the Synology NAS so all the duplicated is redudantly stored? I've done just two days of backups and it has already eaten up 67gb. AT this rate it will fill up hte NAS storage in no time lol.

I wonder if I should try Proxmox Backup Server, I heard that does incremental backups. Would be cool if there was a way to run Proxmox Backup Server in a VM on the Synology NAS and use the NAS storage.

Hi Frank! I'm new to Proxmox and Nas environment, and Proxmox can't back up due to the problem that is called "no space left on nas". I have 16 tb of space on my nas but proxmox already used like 14.25 tb of the space that I have. How can I solve this, any idea?
