When my son was younger, he'd get all excited when I'd say "Simone has a new video!" and we'd watch together. Now I exclaim you have a new video and my 19 yr old says "Yeah, the hat. I already watched it."
At least he still watches!

One of my favourite things about you is that your version of "not working harder" involves 5+ weeks of research and development

A couple of years ago I worked on foldable air plane wings as a student project. When you said you had trouble getting the bag to fold in a certain way consistently, I instantly thought of that project. That's because the project was located at an institute for bionics and biomimetics, so nature-inspired design. They gave me a bunch of pictures of beetle wings. Those wings are built to always fold in exactly the same way, actuated by only one muscle at the leading edge of the wing. It's a very nifty compliant mechanism powered by elaborate, non-linear folding-patterns. The folds curve in ways that has them pull on each other, so the force of that one muscle on the edge is distributed all along the surface of the wing. I'm not sure if by now there is an easy way of generating these patterns for arbitrary shapes though. Robert J. Lang, or someone similarly invested in origami, would probably know about this.

So anyway, what I'm trying to say is: insect wing bag hat when?

Simone buying ten apples to put in her hat is like some question out of a middle school math textbook.

There's a product to make fabric more rigid and it's honest to goodness called "stiffy."
We used it all the time in costuming... and I must say that maintaining a degree of professionalism while asking people to "grab the stiffy for me" is probably the greatest thing I have ever achieved.

5:32 Simone, I sew regularly and this is incredibly relatable for every sewing project I have ever. I even have tags for the clothes I make that say, "thanks I made it" on them (they are my second favorite tags after the "this is the back" tags). This is just what it's like to be a sewist

I love watching people who dont normally work with fabric try to work with it for something "simple". Then you quickly find out that fabric does not care about your preconceived notions of how things are supposed to work

My daughter and I have been watching your videos for years.

Her reactions have changed from her being a six year old "oh, that's so cool" to her being a 13 year old "that's so cool, maybe I could try making that"

Wow, can't believe that Scraps just learned to turn herself into a cat at random. She really is the perfect workshop dog

What I've learned from sewing things is The key to showing off things you sewed yourself is anytime someone says anything positive about it, respond with "Thanks! I made it!" Then you get even more compliments!

Thank you for acknowledging that sewing is a gosh darn skill. Also to everyone wondering: Yes, there is spray on starch that you put on the fabric you're working with and then iron it (a bit lower than the hottest setting) and BOOM stiffer fabric.

Simone's grin as she walked away from the checkout counter is everthing.

A few comments:
1) The final version looked impressively hat-like, even though the penultimate version... not so much.
2) If only she preferred berets over baseball caps.
3) I would bet that there was a point in the process where Simone wore a shopping bag on her head, and wondered if she could call it a hat.

There are moments when I regret watching Simone's videos with my mum. "Clitoral hood" was the apex point.

I felt the whole “I’m gonna say this super confident thing when someone asks me about it” then it actually happens and it’s so awkward you just smile and leave as quickly as possible

I work almost exclusively with fabric, and I understand completely. Not only does the fabric move, but the weave of fabric creates stretch for a lot of fabrics.

I feel like the visor/bill could be a great place to "hide" an origami-like folded net that you could pop open whenever you need a bag 😄

Getting a Simone notification is like getting a text message from one of those friends you don’t see often but can pick up right where you left off 💜

Great to see how hyped she was after getting the compliment from the cashier. So great to see someone so successful still take joys in the “little” things!
