Dr Denise Daley enrolled at the University of the West Indies Jamaica in 2002, where she pursued her BSc. in Biotechnology and Botany and received JAMALCO’s Beneficiary Grant for Academic excellence. During her final year she developed a love for research and later started her Master of Philosophy (MPhil) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Biochemistry, sub-specializing in Pharmacognosy & Natural Products. This work involved the use of a eucalyptus plant to lower blood sugar (Diabetes) and Hypertension (High blood pressure) which received a USA patent in 2016 for the novel findings.

She presented early findings at the University Diabetes Outreach Programme (UDOP) and received poster awards in 2009 and 2010. This research won the Sectional Prize for Health and Wellness in 2012 at the Minister of Science and Technology Awards and also capped prestigious prize of “Innovator of the year”. She was also awarded the UWI Graduate Scholar Award in 2013 and the UWI Principal’s Award in 2014 with new nutraceutical developments for diabetes and hypertension from this project. She is Jamaica’s National Young Scientist and Technologist awarded in November 2016 by the Ministry of Science, Energy and Technology and The Scientific Research Council until November 2018. In May 2017, she received the President’s Award for Excellence in Research and Innovation from The University of Technology, Jamaica.

She has written many research papers, abstracts and posters on various aspects of her work and on other medicinal plants. She currently lectures at the UTECH, Ja in the College of Health sciences as a pharmacognosist, and she is the Programme Director for the Associate and BSc. in Herbal Science, MSc. in Complementary and Alternative Medicine and the MSc. in Corporate Wellness degree programmes. The inaugural Natural, Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NATCAM) Seminar held within the College is under her purview (coordinator). She carries out and supervises project research in order to impart knowledge of medicinal plants, their folkloric use and scientific validation. In her continuing education Dr. Daley also holds a BSc. Human Nutritional Sciences from The University of Manitoba, Canada in order to help more people with different health and wellness concerns and incorporate this knowledge into her wellness research. Her zeal for science, nutrition and research has also brought her to The Richardson Centre for Functional Foods & Nutraceuticals (U of M) as a part-time research technician.
