Dude, my pick is king Karl X Gustaf. Denmark and Norway chose to attack sweden all at once while Swedens King and armies was in Poland, unable to return by boat he marched with his army from Poland into Denmark from the south, took the BOLDEST risk and marched with his entire army OVER THE FREAKING ICE over not one but TWO frozen straits entering Denmark which was unproteced cause their armies were attacking Sweden and forced them to make piece. And also give up huge tracts of land to Sweden. What a GOAT! It's generally called "Freden i Roskilde" (The piece in Roskilde")

Sweden and Denmark have had a long history of rivalries and have fought each other for centuries. They hold the record for the most wars fought between two countries, with approximately 30 wars since the 15th century. Making the UK and France rivalry lackluster in comparison.

The Battle of Narva, right where you paused actually, it's quite interresting to learn more about.

Wow, as a Swede 🇸🇪, I have sooo much that I wanna share with you! 😍 But I'll compress it to a top 3:

1. Birka - it's known as the first actual city of Sweden and was one of Scandinavia's largest city during the Viking era. A majority of what we know from the Viking era is because of the many archaeological discoveries found on this one tiny island and its neighbours, such as graves and rune stones. I live on one of the neighbouring islands, and they're all still very much "countryside" despite being located right in the middle of Stockholm, so a lot of the stuff found is actually still there, right in the middle of the forests, fields etc (we literally had school excursions where we'd walk for about 15-20 minutes to look att the rune stones and grave, they're that close to the society). Birka is now a historical village, and all summer long it serves as a tourist attractions where you can actually try being a Viking for the day, in an actual historically correct setting (definitely worth a visit!) ⚔️

2. Stormaktstiden/The Great Swedish Empire Era (1611-1721) - Its when us Swedes were at our military peak, and we had great success and was hugely victorius in many of the battles we fought all around Europe, starting with King Gustavus Adolphus and ending with Charles XII (Carolus Rex). For the short version of it, you can start off by listening to the Swedish melodic death metal band Sabaton, who has recorded a whole album about this era called "Carolus Rex" (available both in Swedish and English, both equally good!) and then go from there! 🛡

3. The Vasa Ship - I won't tell you much about this one (actually, close to nothing), because this is a story best experienced/enjoyed for the first time without spoilers. All I can say is that during the peak of Stormaktstiden, we also saw one of our biggest fails (or more like a blooper, because the Story of The Vasa Ship is probably one of the most fun, savage and probably biggest mistakes ever made in history). Enjoy! And do come to the museum, it's great! I work in the travel industry, and I recommend this all the time! ⚓️

Also, I love your videos soooo much! It's so refreshing to hear all of your thoughts and perspective on the things I too often take for granted here in Sweden, and your voice and the way you speak is probably one of the most calming things I've ever experienced (and I have severe adhd if that wasn't already obv)! You are equally good to listen to whether I am going to sleep, driving to work or just want something on in the background when I'm doing other stuff! Thank you for making my life so much better, hope you enjoyed my suggestions and sooo sorry for the mile long content, I got way to excited when you asked us! 😂🙈💕

Interesting fact is that Viking era is not the start of boat trips as the people in the area have traded like that since at least the bronze age.
It's a bit western Europe centric to think Vikings as a new thing just because they started raiding western Europe at that time.

And yes, Sweden having been at war a lot and essentially decided it wasn't worth the effort as land was gained and lost in costly wars.
Sweden also took a break from wars when it had an easily defended border with land border being a short and north of the polar circle.

Gustav III is an interesting king. He was a humanist, interested in bringing culture to Sweden. Abolished torture and reformed punishments, making infant murder illegal. He allowed common people to hold important official posts. He thought the nobles had too much power and so he was murdered. He might have been bisexual.

My boyfriend loves the series Vikings so he decided one day to look up some videos here on YouTube about the different well known leaders or so, he learned a lot. Just had to ask him what he searched for 😂, he said he searched for known viking kings of England. I'm from the South and we had belonged to Denmark longer than Sweden. Our Scanian flag is red with a yellow cross ( red from the danish flag and yellow from the swedish)

The Great Northern War and the adventures of Charles XII is very interesting. So many battles and so many events, lots of them extraordinary.

After looking around a bit for posts about the Vikings I have found two that sounds quite good.
1. What was the difference between Danish, Swedish and Norwegian Vikings. Made by History with Magnus. What really happened?
2. Differences between Norwegian, Swedish and Danish Vikings. Made by Norse Magic and Beliefs.
Hope you find them interesting.

The Swedish vikings went east like he said. The varangian guard was not comprised entirely of norsemen, many of them were also Kievan Rus (who went native within a generation or two and mixed with the slavic locals). They were the emperor's bodyguard not just because they were fearsome warriors, but also because they were outsiders who owed all their power solely to the emperor; unlike the scheming nobles at court, they were politically reliable because they were loyal only to the emperor.

Gustav II Adolf, AKA Gustavus Adolphus, brings Sweden into "stormaktstiden", "the age of great power", 100 or so years where Sweden is a major European power. They were backed by France, despite Louis XIII being catholic, because they shared an enemy in the Holy Roman Empire. It is said France benefited most out of the 30 years war, and Sweden second.

Surprised he skipped over Charles X's biggest accomplishment- after failing to defeat the Poles, he marched across the strait of Belt during a particularly harsh winter, and unexpectedly attacked the Danes. The Danish were caught unawares and were forced to give up the counties of Blekinge, Skåne and Halland, which is today southern sweden. The danes tried to take it back during the reign of Charles XI, but after the Battle of Lund- the bloodiest battle fought on Swedish soil- they were forced to give that up.

Charles XII is overhyped. He was a good commander but he just went way too far, his foreign policy was completely unsustainable, we just didn't have the men and resources to wage so many wars constantly. (The video doesn't mention it but he's eventually KIA'd in a campaign in Norway, at Fort Halden)

Andd yes, there were a ton of wars, just loads of them. Denmark and Sweden have a world record of most wars fought between two nations.

The science- you'd be surprised how many elements are named for the city of Ytterby. Terbium, Ytterbium, Yttrium etc. Not to mention "tungsten", which just means "heavy rock".

The French king, the house of Bernadotte which reigns to this day- basically Gustav IV of Sweden got involved in the Napoleonic wars, lost badly, and Russia took Finland. He was deposed, and parliament elected to invite Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte, one of Napoleon's marshals, to be their king. He would rule as king Charles XIV John of Sweden.

I think the rivalry that still exists between Denmark and Sweden stems from all the wars we have fought against each other. It's in our DNA. But as a Dane with Swedish ancestry, it's not something that means that much to me. Of course I support Denmark when we, for example, play football against Sweden, but when they play against any other country, I support Sweden. 😊

Lets not forget Carl von Linné, the man that put latin scientific names on flowers and animals.

Great content as allways Mert! Just wanted to point out that the picture of Karl X Gustav (Charles X, 4:53) shows a completely different person and the dates are wrong. The real Karl X Gustav is remembered for, among other things, becoming abnormaly fat, essentially the Henry VIII of swedish history!

It might be worth noting that although sweden HAS been at war with England /UK we are one of the 22 countries that's never been invaded by England.
Also you might like to look into the navalbattle of Orford Ness (in the english channel) in 1704. Where a Swedish frigate under command of Gustaf von Psilander took on EIGHT english ships of the line and after having fought valiantly was taken by the English. By that time Psilander had sunk one and severly damaged a number of the other English ships.
Since Psilander would be given a deathsentence had he surrendered he chose to hoist his signalflags to read "distress" and could then let the english take his ship as he had run out of cannonballs and gunpowder.
Sweden and England was not at war at this time and both nations wanted to hide the whole incident and Von Psilander and his crew was released and sent back to sweden where he would rise to the rank of Admiral and Commander of the Navy.

You should really watch a comparison video of Volvo and SAAB they are the most swedish car brands ever! (Not anymore tho cus now they are both chinese I think) but more in detail the Volvo 740 GLE and the SAAB 9000 those two cars were in a contest for Swedens safest, most comfortable and best maneuverability for a car. I would REALLY reccomend it :D

One reason many Swedes immigrated to America is because of starvation years.
