Based on the best-selling young-adult novel by author Suzanne Collins, The Hunger Games tells the dark tale of a 16-year-old girl named Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence), who is selected to compete in a vicious televised tournament in which 24 teenagers from a post-apocalyptic society fight to the death for the entertainment of the masses. In the future, North America is no more. In its place has risen Panem, a divided nation split into 12 districts. Every year, each district selects a teen of each gender (called "Tributes") to test their worth in a competition known as the Hunger Games, which are broadcast across the nation as entertainment, and to reinforce the government's total power. When her younger sister is selected as District 12's latest "Tribute," Katniss volunteers to take her place, and trains under hard-drinking former Hunger Games champion Haymitch Abernathy (Woody Harrelson) to sharpen her killer instincts. I can't believe people still overlook Peeta's intelligence: he came up with the whole star-crossed lovers of district 12 and kept them both alive though the first games and a good part of the second ones with the fake pregnancy thing

This was great, when katniss pulled the knife on him, haymitch realized he finally had a pair of tributes who could fight, ever since the 50th hunger games, haymitch failed being a mentor but now he had a chance to teach a pair he knew he could help

0:40 That's actually a lot deeper than one might think. Haymitch is the only victor, and he won twenty four years before Katniss and Peeta came along. Being the only victor in Twelve means that he's been forced to do this stuff every year for more than half of his life. Giving advice, trying to help the poor kids who have been picked, only to have them be killed every single time by another tribute.
Think of what that would do to you! Meeting two kids every year, *knowing* that they really don't stand a chance against the others, and having to try to be nice and helpful to them.
I would be more surprised if he WASN'T an alcohlic.

Edit: As several replies mention, there was in fact another victor from district 12, who, however is dead during the time in which the books take place. It had simply passed out of my memory at the time of writing this comment.

People overlook how important it is to have the audience like you. If you are a well liked tribute and manage become a fan favorite, the game makers will try to keep you alive due to your positive impact on ratings. Because in the end, it is a reality show. You have to be the one everyone in the capital tunes into watch. Building an interesting story around yourself is the greatest thing you can do.

When Haymitch said “this mentoring is very taxing stuff” you’re meant to think he’s a drunk who doesn’t care about the tributes. Really, he’s been watching his tributes die year after year for 24 years and he can’t take it anymore so he just shuts off. Haymitch was easily my favorite character, deep back story

What’s memorable about this scene is that Katniss saw how serious Peeta was and thought Peeta was her enemy who wanted to win the Games himself, even if that meant killing her.

But actually, Peeta was so set on learning survival tips because he was committed to doing everything he could to keep Katniss alive in the arena, with no thought of himself or his own safety. At this point, he was completely prepared to give up his life to save hers.

If that’s not true love, I don’t know what is 🥲

I love how Petta started right away with the "Get people to like you" idea. I am pretty sure that without him playing the star Katniss would not have a good opportunity.

At the end of the day, the hunger games isn't Wilderness Survival, it's reality TV. Where the most popular tributes are the ones to survive.
