Also, while I’m not a smoker, I think it would be weird a waiter was watching me that closely to know he would need to get me a lighter. That would make me uncomfortable being watched by my EVERY little move.

But totally unless when you handle British people who nowadays they don’t even know the difference between bring the food and provide an excellent service. They pay that 12.5 % of service charge which that amount it doesn’t go straight to the waiter but it will be spilt among the entire team of the restaurant ( chefs included). They give everything for granted and slowly slowly this job is becoming very flat and poor of ambition. Because it doesn’t matter what you do or offer for them
You pay the service and that’s it my friend

Where do terraces allow smoking ? Lighting someone’s cigarette would be a liability to the business. Where I come from they have banned smoking since 1995.
