HP Lovecraft: The True Horror of The Great Old Ones

The Cosmos is endless. It is Sprawling beyond comprehension. Science tells us that the universe is mostly empty, made up of distant stretches of vast silent emptiness, with only the star systems passing by swiftly only to return to the void. Galaxies themselves even are silent wanderers, separated by incomprehensible cosmic gulfs. With all we know now, the wise are aware of the fact that we have merely observed an infinitesimally small portion of our universe. Lovecraft’s Cosmic horror filled the gaps in our knowledge of the universe with unspeakable terrors. He wrote of things wandering through the dark, things so great, so beyond our reasoning or understanding that perhaps they wouldn’t even see us as living beings ourselves. Or even be bothered by our presence enough to consider us nuisances.

But in the Call of Cthulhu the horror does not await in distant space. It is not bound to another realm of existence only able to cross over when summoned by the Necronomicon. Cthulhu slept beneath the very ocean itself.

If you find yourself with an inheritance from an estranged and eccentric distant relative, you might become the doomed protatonist in a Lovecraftian narrative. RUN!

Love your work Quinn...
On that note, I grew up on a remote island on Canada’s northwest coast, in a house next to the only sand beach on the island. There was an old rusting hulk of a ship jutting out into the sea that I was ordered by my grandfather not to play around as it contained dangers I was too young to understand. I was told that off the end of this ship, the shallows dropped away into the abyss, and on those rare extreme low tides that only happened a few times a year, I would see this edge.
When I was very young, I was haunted by dreams of a monstrous form rising from the depths at this drop off, a mere 250 feet from where I slept. This form looked remarkably like what Lovecraft described. These dreams started when I was four and had never even heard of Cthulhu!?!
I’m a professional mariner now and make my living from the sea, but every so often I’ll gaze into the depths below my punny little ship and feel those old feelings of dread again, knowing there are things down there we can never hope to know.
PS, I didn’t invent a word of this... it’s all absolutely true.

What I find so interesting about Lovecraft stories is how it's possible to take all these monsters and map them to scientific concepts in a coherent way. Radiation sickness: Color Out of Space. Cryogenics: Cool Air. The then-barely understood field of Marine Biology: The Shadow Over Innsmouth. The theory of Panspermia: At Mountains of Madness. Consciousness downloading: The Shadow Out of Time. Gravity Wells: The Other Gods. The theory of Black Holes: Azathoth. Multiverse Theory: From Beyond. Quantum Mechanics: Dreams in the Witch House. Quantum Entanglement: The Dunwich Horror. The entire existential crisis that results from entertaining the Mediocrity Principle: The Call of Cthulhu

Bloodborne has some of the best Lovecraft inspired lore/content out there. Annihilation was a great film. Real shame the genre isn't more popular.

"Nothing written in those old books."

I bet the first page says "So excited to start my new Etsy journal. I'm really going to stick with it this year."

I always loved the sobering feeling of existential dread that get from lovecraft, the sense of pure abyssmal meaningless existence we have in the universe. True horror dosent need any jumpscares or gore, just the truth that we constantly choose to ignore and how the real monsters dont hide under our beds, but instead under our skin.

Looking out onto a stormy New England sea right now, it’s early morning the sun has not risen yet. The tips of trees are barely visible about forty feet out, the light from our balcony barely reaching them. There is no moon tonight, but the sea is faintly illuminated by the street lights of a town about three miles up the road. I have lived both upon the New England coast and the deep woods of rural Massachusetts and Vermont. I love this region of the country, I grew up here, but I can’t lie and say that I’ve never looked out into the woods of rural Vermont or the grey waters of a stormy cape cod and felt an odd sense of melancholy and even dread. It is this foreboding environment mixed with the beauty of winter and fall here that makes it easy for me to understand how this place has produced both nature loving transcendentalists like Thoreau and Emerson, and horror writers like Lovecraft and King. Jeez that was a bit of tirade, hope you all have a good Halloween. I get moody during my morning tea.

Good cuthulu-esque movie; "In The Mouth of Madness", in which an author ascends to godhood, from the perspective of that author's protagonist as that protagonist is being written into reality. It takes a couple of watches, like Donnie Darko, but it's so good.

Huge recommendation for Horrorbabble here on Youtube, readings of Cthulhu mythos stories and other Weird Tales stuff etc. Ian’s voice is great for it.

"I have 4 brothers take any one of them..." 🤣 As a Lovecraft fan I enjoyed this very much. Nice job!

“The Oldest Emotion of Mankind is Fear, and the Oldest Fear is that of the Unknown.” -H.P. Lovecraft, Supernatural Horror In Literature.

Seriously though, this was a great talk about Lovecraft. Hope to see more stuff. See you soon. Also, have you considered looking into the “H.P. Lovecraft Historical Society”? They have some interesting material all dealing with Lovecraft’s stuff. There’s their films that they’ve done, and they’ve also done audio dramas called, “Dark Adventure Radio Theatre”, which when you get the CD, you get props made by HPLHS related to the story.

I loved this! But about "no good Lovecraft adaptations": I thought the recent film version of "Color Out of Space" was a phenomenal adaptation. It wasn't based off any of the "Old Ones" stories which are likely more difficult to convey, but it did capture the Lovecraft feel of something that didn't belong among humankind very well.

You should check out the Japanese manga adaptations of H. P. Lovecraft's stories, by Tanabe Gou. Tanabe does a lot of horror-themed manga, and Lovecraft is one of his focuses. He does a really great job bringing Lovecraft's stories to life. Some of them have been translated to English. I don't think Tanabe's version of The Call of Cthulhu has been translated to English yet, but I have it in Japanese and it's brilliant. I really recommend checking out his stuff.

I love how goofy but serious this is. Like, you really are a great script writer and performer. You always make your personal creative material seem so fun and campy, but it's clear that that's the intent. It's just always good to see light hearted content be made while still holding the theme of something so dark.
Also, you've really inspired me to read so many Sci-fi books and helped me get back into bukding my own worlds in hopes to brind some to life, again! I appreciate you and all your works

"The Void" is a good film with a Lovecraftian vibe! There is also a great Spanish film called "Dagon", which combines elements of various HPL stories including Dagon and Shadow over Insmouth. Quite satisfying to watch!
