There is also resource management involved in a pure magic user, i.e. splitting flasks between health and FP, and stats when leveling up have to be invested in Mind. This means killing many individual trash mobs with spell is easy, but crawling/clearing a whole area with magic is frankly not that easy. My melee char has an overall easier time/less deaths doing that. Also some enemies are super easy as mage, and other that are in your face a lot are not. You also need to explore everything to get a decent range of spells - there can be a trap in the mid-level range where your pebble just doesn't cut it anymore at all (this changes again later tho). It's a different playstyle, showcases suggest it's easy mode, but it's more balanced than ppl think.

Just started my second play through as a mage a week ago and it’s been fun 👍 not as OP as you might think but definitely strong

From my experience it seems deceptively strong early on but when fast moving bosses get on top of you that can be hard to deal with. Also you have to learn to juggle having the right balance of health/verse focus potions to get through dungeons. I had to go back and make an all melee character to be succeed at magic so I could learn the things I was weak at.

Ah yes the OP magic that needs 4 hit to kill the tutorial boss while a guard counter melee hit 1 shot the same boss.

some of the best fights in elden ring ie mohg, lichdragon, rykard many more are totally "skipped" by blasting a comet azur on the boss right at the start. also meterorites of astel take out like 2/3rd of malenia's health when she is doing her bloom animation

Magic is easy mode in practically any souls game if you know how to build for it. Back in Ds1 there was a dark spell setup that could one shot like 90% of bosses in NG+.

Yeah magic is op. So is strength and dexterity and faith. Every proper build is op.

Don't be fooled, I found it much easier being a melee class than being a mage. Yes a lot of the time you can be a walking tank if you do the grind and get all the best spells... but then you have to worry about flask distributing, certain bosses will just laugh at you if you use certain spells on them....and then against quicker bosses you are better off using slow AOE spells than normal spells cuz they will dodge em and laugh lol. All in all as someone on their first play through was as a frost witch/dex build, it honestly can suck to be a mage especially if you didn't bother to get a decent or solid off hand weapon to compensate.

Having beaten the game with a 90% magic build, Hand of Malenia NG+ meme run, Moonveil with magic, pure strength, and now halfway into dual whips, I’ll say people hating on magic don’t know what they’re talking about. All builds have strengths and weaknesses. Huge, slow bosses tend to be much easier with magic, because of lower risk of getting hit, while smaller and humanoid bosses are free with weapons, as you just stagger them out of their animations or status effect them into oblivion. Magic build becomes increasingly harder, as bosses get faster and move more, as well as start having crazy resistances. All builds are fun and all builds are «broken». Put down your Guts sword or Rivers of Blood and try a magic build. I promise you’ll have fun and still be challenged.

Asmom got super lucky with RNG here. Before facing that monster at the end of the “tutorial” I recommend at least being level 130 and being a mage of some kind (respec with larvael tear if you have to) with mimic tier, the devs made it to where you can’t summon anyone before that monsters fight (ludicrous I know). If you trying fighting that thing as a melee character all I have to say is goodluck brave tarnished
